Not exactly art…persay in the strictest sense, I guess that’s why I filed it under New Media for lack of a better category. For example, take Sandy Paws Grooming Shop, a service “for those who are overly concerned about the dogs emotions. Cindy [the poodle] loves the attention. She will prance around and expects your attention. This is a Creative Grooming Contest and Cindy will look like this for only a few hours. After the contest Cindy will be shaved.” Some of these are kind of scary actually, like Cindy in a chicken costume (…?) looks like she formed a tumor then ran into a wall with her head…

Darla Teagarden is a former make-up artist, hair stylist, model, and writer whose diverse past shines through in her photography. Included in her work are hand-made and personally staged props that she uses to create a mythical setting for the viewer, rather than using digital means such as Photoshop. The rabbits, bees, and strange body parts that make each piece unique are staged at the time of the photo shoot and are not altered.

A few months ago I had the pleasure of interviewing artist Sean Pecknold regarding his video work. He has a nostalgic, bittersweet charm to his works that evoke a feeling similar to discovering a sepia-toned portrait of your great grandparents and a dried rose from an undiscovered dusty cigar box in the attic. His animations often complement the music in strange ways, not creating direct narratives that “spell out” the lyrics of the song, but rather riff off the themes within the music in unexpected ways. He recently just completed a new video for Elvis Perkins in Dearland, a slowly sinking band presiding in a lit cave above a murky, watery world of ancient lion sculpture…haunting, beautiful and strange.

Semen/New York Post collage

A nod to the passing of prodigious asinine youth culture documenter, Dash Snow, who reportedly fell victim to the same choice of poison as his photographic subjects. Most of his images are too gnarly (snorting cocaine off a penis, sexual escapades, general urban debauchery) to post on this blog but I’m sure you’ll find them very well & easily if you just Google him. Here’s some of tamer ones after the jump…

German artist Heike Weber creates paintings and drawings by utilizing techniques of heavy repetition. Some of these pieces are purely textural, like the blue ballpoint pen drawings (after the jump), though I think the ones I like the best are in his “Kilims” series, which seem to reference Eastern calligraphic styles.

Inspired by the recent photography book Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York, commercial illustrator Bryan Christie has begun posting some new recreations of NYC storefronts on his blog. The illustrations are done in his familiar style – very slick and clean 3D stuff, which creates an interesting disconnect from these stores’ urban environments. There are three of them so far, hopefully more to come.
