Cathy Durso explores our connection with animals. (She does so literally in her “Megabeasts” series, which features animal-human hybrids). I love her simple ink-on-paper drawings. She’s also worked in collage, textile, and web design. On her site she notes that she loves to hike, which is probably where she gets a lot of inspiration, and also documents her Whuldebynx sightings.

A while back, we posted Takeuchi Taijin’s amazing Wolf & Pig stop motion animation. His latest clip for Olympus PEN Giant follows a young man navigating an urban city-scape in a similar stop-motion journey through 355 stunning photographs printed billboard size! Combine the variety of Hieronymus Bosch and the weirdness of David Lynch; add a pinch of skateboarding and two d-cups of death metal and you’ve got a good recipe for taking in Dan Attoe’s newest painting, “Accretion 40.” Placing multiple small scenes over an end-of-days landscape, he touches on everything from a drawing monkey (self-portrait?), to strippers, Christmas, and going to Hell. Dan put the finishing touches on this yesterday, and he’s about to move and have a kid, so this is going to be the last big painting for a little while.

French designer and illustrator Maxime Francout’s quirky designs are super fun and are sure to brighten up your day! Much of the time, you can find Francout’s designs on T-shirts (he’s made some for Urban Outfitters), but he’s also designed art zines, loves to create hand drawn type, and he’s even made some wallpaper for Studio Nommo.

Incredibly palpitating watercolors coming out of Berlin courtesy of Manfred Naescher. Aside from being loads of fun, watercolor remains one of my favorite mediums because of all the unexpected and recalcitrant twists and turns the pigments usually take. Manfred publishes Screenshots, which as he describes it is “an homage to and an exploration of film in the form of an ongoing series of picture fanzines; a bi-monthly printed publication of recontextualized, reconfigured cinematic imagery—as interpreted through serial drawings and paintings.” He also works as an art director, overseeing the creation of packaging, logos and website design for a growing list of clients. Burgeoning graphic designers take note, this is how it’s done!!

Wildlife and Wildlives make up the world of artist Sage Vaughn. Swarming brightly colored butterflies along with strangely dressed kids makes for some interesting subject matter, and there is definitely a feeling of tension between the natural and unnatural elements in these paintings. Born in Jackson, Oregon and now working in Los Angeles, Sage also helped illustrate a killer music video for N.A.S.A. that you can see here.
