John Miller

1992: daadgalerie/Bruno Brunnet Fine Arts

John Miller’s representations of urban planning and architecture reminds me of childhood games with mud and found objects belonging to my parentals. And though children no more…we’re all still unable to let go of decadence and blissful ignorance…

Rainbow Arabia- “Let Them Dance”

Rainbow Arabia in a couple words: “A small but eminently worthy example could even be found in the mere existence of this rad new band called Rainbow Arabia. Based in Echo Park, they’re the husband-and-wife team of Daniel and Tiffany Preston, whose colorfully tough new dance-floor exotica rocks so hard at least partially because of what we and they have learned about ‘world music.'”

Things to note in the video directed by Jacqueline Castel: the neon colored instruments, guns, fast cuts and zooms, and lastly, the ability to bring Echo Park to just about anywhere in the world! I love it.

SPORTS! at Synchronicity Gallery

Show flyer using video artist Tobacco's still

SPORTS! is a group show curated by Ryan Travis Christian (I believe he is an interviewer on Fecal Face) opening TONIGHT (7pm – 12am) at Synchronicity Gallery in the Melrose/Heliotrope area. Anyone in the area should go because judging by the work that’s going to be featured in the show, and the after gallery hours night-time musical entertainment that the gallery are putting on, it seems like it’s going to be a great show + vibe. I wish I could go but I’m leave for the desert in 10 minutes! A list of the artists, details, and a list of the images are after the jump. Yay! Sports!

YouCube

YouCube Demo Video from Aaron Meyers on Vimeo.

Friend and past-professor Aaron Meyers created this amazing project on his free-time. It allows you to map YouTube videos onto an interactive 3D cube and then save it to a database so you can show your friends. As you spin around a YouCube, the sounds of the different videos fade in and out. Its seriously amazing. My video is the last on the list but the first one to be created during the trial run… its called ‘Hamster Wheel’, so look for it! Aaron’s also worked on the awesome Radiohead video House of Cards. You can see more of his projects after the jump.

Undoubtably maybe the best kindergarten south of heaven?

Kashiwa Sato’s identity system for Fuji Kindergarten is probably the cutest AND awesome-est piece of branding I have seen for a while… but maybe that could be the heart-melting candid photos of the totally adorable toddlers running around. Who knows, if I had begun my educational journey here instead, maybe I would have turned out to be a whole different human being… I think this kindergarten is the equivalent of the High School #9 for the Visual and Performing Arts by architect firm Coop Himmelblau because of the complete wholeness the design + architecture. Just looking at it makes me want to learn (!!)

Jean Marembert

Jean Marembert (1904 – 1968) was a founder of the group with Louis Cattiaux – a group of Surrealists of a more decorative nature. His work is also, like Giuseppe Arcimboldo’s work, looks like it was made in this century instead of the last. That just goes to show how our current sensibilities are based off the past. Old aesthetics are recurring and cycled through, even filtered down. That’s why I believe it when people say that nothing is ever original anymore.
