Alessandro di Prisco has created a number of beautiful design objects. His latest is Cubico, a multi-functional cube that can serve as a coffee table, magazine rack, stool or as just an objet d’art. Clever design is really all about marrying form and function in an intelligent and beautiful way.
Michael Beitz kicks of our first Design Month, in which we will be exploring all the best stuff the design world has to offer.
Michael Beitz’ Picnic Table was commissioned by the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, in Omaha, Nebraska, as a permanent installation on its front loading dock, in conjunction with the Bemis Gardens exhibition and design laboratory.
Chasing Madoff is the compelling story of Harry Markopolos and his team of investigator’s ten-year struggle to expose the harrowing truth behind the infamous Madoff scandal. Throughout the decade long investigation, Markopolos pieced together a chain of white-collar predators consisting of bankers, lieutenants, and henchmen, all linked to the devastating Ponzi scheme. With risk and danger apparent, Markopolos and his loyal team relentlessly continued to pursue the frightening truth. Finding himself trapped in a web of epic deceit, the once unassuming Boston securities analyst turned vigilante investigator now feared for his life and the safety of his family, as he discovered no one would listen. Watch a trailer for Chasing Madoff after the jump.
Fixed Design hails from San Francisco and we first saw them at this year’s Dwell on Design event. Their products are pretty stunning, our personal favorite was this turntable and record collection friendly shelf called the Extended Play.
It’s an acrylic stone shelf nestled at an angle inside a walnut shell, the unit has casters making it super easy to move from room to room. They are even stackable! Thumbs way up!
Bernhard Bukard’s Curt Deck Chair is probably the coolest outdoor furniture we’ve seen in a while. On his site Bernard assures us that, “even though it looks dangerous it provides comfort seating and relaxing in every occasion. To achieve best stability, it needs to be leaned against walls or rails in a flat angle. The anti-slip coated stand provides safe grip on every surface.”
French Design firm Mr. & Mr. reinterpreted da Vinci’s Last Supper into a clever series of table runners and place mats. The hand gestures are in the exact postion and in the same ratio as the original. Next time you have friends over for dinner where will you sit? Watch out for Judas!
Rebecca Wilson talks about her paper cup project, “The paper cup is an icon of the ‘throwaway culture’ and by imposing classical ceramic styling and transposing materials I aim to highlight and question our tendency towards wasteful consumerism.
Appealing design and intelligent function come together in Vial’s Fida Folding Mat. The next time you need to sit on the ground, plan ahead and get yourself this mat. Turn heads at the park, and make people jealous of your good taste and better design sense. It’s reversible, sturdy, has a pocket to store your reading materials, packs up easily and my favorite part is that it folds into a backrest. If you have a birthday gift coming up, this would be an awesome thing to get.
