Garnet Hertz, a research scientist at UCI, recently developed “OutRun,” a driving game that you can actually drive. The project’s physical form is a mashup between an arcade game from the 80s (OutRun) and a modern day golf cart complete with some sweet rims (check those things out!). Using computer vision, the graphics of the game are able to update in real time to correspond to the road ahead… making it possible to drive in a mixed reality! I don’t know about you, but I wish driving on the 10/110 interchange here in Los Angeles was this fun… Learn more about it works, and see it in action after the jump!

Tiger and Turtle – Magic Mountain is a large site specific sculpture by Heike Mutter and Ulrich Genth that is a roller coaster for those of us who don’t like the sensation of falling to our death over and over again at hundreds of miles an hour. Built as the ultimate roller coaster for pedestrians, this magnificent piece sits on top of a man made hill in Duisburg that acts as a giant green pedestal for the work. Visitors are invited to walk through the maze of loops and turns using the LED lit handrails and the even spaced steps that casually guide them through the official roller coaster for the speed challenged.

One of the most iconic artists of our time Mike Kelley passed away today at the age of 58. With over four decades of activity within the international art world spanning dozens dozens of museum shows, several art noise bands, and multiple Whitney Biennial inclusions,  Kelley will be sorely missed by the art community. For the past five years, NYC based Akira Horikawa has been working on the “1000 Drawing Project.” In pocket size sketchbooks, he draws and reinterpret images that come into his mind, happenings, dreams, and any and all unusual events. Akira welcome the nonsense of the world with awe and documents it for all of us to enjoy. New York-based photographer Alison Brady makes some pretty bizarre photos. Pretty and bizarre. The interesting and different perspective is what catches your eye; instead of a traditional beauty-in-the-person snap, these portraits give the car-accident-look- away urge while simultaneously pushing a strange narrative inside a beautiful anonmity. It’s worth mentioning that Alison Brady is also extremely accesible with regard to questioning her work. She encourages the viewer to infer their own titles/meanings and often will discuss her representation without any pretense.

Alison had a new book come out in November of last year entitled The Blind Barber. Having followed her work for years, it’s great to watch the progression from weird to weirder. In the world of the sometimes monotonous contemporary portrait, weird is great, and always will be.

In a bizarre turn of events a 36- year old woman faces charges for going to the Clyfford Still Museum in Denver, walking up to up to Still’s “1957-J-No. 2” painting which is worth around $40 million dollars and scratching the painting, pounding her fists against the wall next to it, and in a grand finally pulling her pants down and urinating next to the historically significant painting. We’re not sure if this was a bad performance piece or jus the work of  someone gone mad but based on the mug shot we’re going with the lather.  Watch the full news video after the jump!
