Any “best of” list must surely be subjective. This one is no different. Choosing the best photographs of the year is an enormously difficult task, with many terrific photographs slipping through the cracks. But with major news events as a guide, and with single images I fell in love with throughout the year forcing their way into the edit, I look at my favorite pictures from the first four months of the year. Two main stories dominated headlines in the first part of the year: the Japan earthquake and tsunami, and the rising of the Arab Spring. The protests in the Middle East would spread to Greece, Spain, and eventually inspire the Occupy movement in Western nations. Other stories included a historic wave of tornados in the U.S., and the creation of the world’s newest nation in South Sudan. Images from the rest of the year will follow in posts later this week. – Lane Turner (Via Boston Globe)

I personally hate having to shave and try to put it off at all cost but it seems that there is a segment of the world who looks forward to facial hair grooming so much so that they have events challenging one another for the apparently highly coveted title of World Beard and Mustache Champion . Talented photographer Sheri Manson has documented these fierce facial whisker warriors to see who had what it took to take the title of the ultimate beard champion. The results are funny, fascinating, and down right bizarre! Want to grow your own champion beard or mustache? It seems there is nothing that Paris-based  performance/design/art collective Shoboshobo cannot do. Led by Mehdi Hercberg though faceless, the group covers entire map of artistic expression. Responsible for countless exhibitions, books, installations, design projects, and oddball acts of goofiness, Shoboshobo is a reliable source for inspiration, intrigue, and  confusion. Read more »

Can video games be art? If you ask me, I’d say “Yep,” and I’m sure you would be hard-pressed to find anyone under 30 who would say “Nope”. I just asked because you still have people like this, but he also thought this, so he’s not very credible now is he. Anyway, we’ve got a couple of games (BNPJ.exe and Mansion) created by the versatile Tabor Robak available for free download.

Mansion (2010) didn’t really do much for me, and it seems like a warm-up for Tabor. BNPJ.exe (2011), on the other hand, is certainly more developed, but still a bit too linear. He does insure that BNPJ.exe will be viewed as an attempt at art simply because he wraps most of these strange worlds in famous paintings. Frankly, I am not fond of this tendency in contemporary art to reference itself as a safety net, but I don’t believe it is a primary aspect of the game. I admit it is hard to judge, because the criteria for games is far different than the criteria for art, but sometimes you should just have a good time and resist assessing the shit out of something.  BNPJ.exe is not without its moments of beauty though, and when I came upon this image directly below I was insured of a promising future (I did come upon this in a non-linear fashion, and it took me multiple tries to find it). I don’t know of any similar types of “art games”, and I think Tabor Robak could really create something powerful with his next game.  I know I’ll being waiting in anticipation to see where he takes these “art games”, and I’m curious to hear what you dudes think about these interactive experiments.

This is such a bizarre mash up of acts that I couldn’t resist posting it.  Matt and Kim, Soulja Boy, and Andrew W.K. have risen from the dead to throw a raging dance party in a morgue. The mortician has left for the night, the limbs are fresh and there’s formaldehyde on ice.
