Radical Computer Music Course Description:
Date: Time: i^3 hypermedia will be hosting a netcast Radical Computer Music Course entitled “Mort Aux Vaches Ekstra”. It will be taught by Gaeoudjiparl Van Den Dobbelsteen, aka Goodiepal (both are aliases of Kristian Vester, a renowned Scandinavian electronic/electro acoustic musician and professor of music composition). Gaeoudjparl will be lecturing live from London via the internet to a core group of up to 20 students plus a general audience. The entire event will be streamed live on the i^3 website (www.i3hypermedia.com).

i^3 is currently seeking a core-student body to participate in this event. In order to fully participate, each student must obtain Gaeoudjiparl’s new book (the “Mort Aux Vaches Ekstra Extra” Education Book, available at www.i3hypermedia.com/CubeCart). It contains a toolset which will allow each of them to become a co-composer of Vester’s new magnum work of the same title. Over 300 have been completed by students all over Europe since the program was set into motion in the fall of 2007. Examples can be viewed http://www.flickr.com/photos/26336036@N03/sets/72157604939721183/. General audience members do not need a copy to sit in on the event and will still be able to obtain the education.

Gaeoudjiparl has many new, worthwhile ideas on saving the sorry state of modern computer music, and for anyone involved with electronic music, this is not to be missed! His project is an attempt to declare war on traditional music education systems and to bring computer music back to what it could have been - a way of creating new sounds in new ways with NO BOUNDARIES!!!!! For more information, visit www.i3hypermedia.com/events. Gaeoudjiparl apologizes for the subtitles in the embedded video, which he claims are rather literal. (12:45, 18:42 and 25:14 are all recommended starting points for this rather long and winding lecture.)

i^3 hypermedia is a progressive production and post-production house dedicated to creating new types of visualization and storytelling models. The innovative techniques used in projects such as B-17: A Mini Epic and ><: Level 2 (www.youtube.com/bseventeen) have set into motion the Hyper-Cinema™ method being developed at i^3 by Arturo Cubacub and Sarah Weis. On Feb. 29th - March 2nd they hosted the first quadrennial (international | independent | interstitial) festival, celebrating work created in the spaces between established genres, formats and mediums.

Potential students (of any age or background) should write to info@i3hypermedia.com to secure a spot.

SOLAR SYSTEM (The Turning Heads) Description:
Date: Time: After a hiatus of seven years, we are pleased to be showing a new body of work by Thomas Woodruff. His signature use of traditional illustration, art history, tattoo design, and cartoons are employed to create this new series of paintings that are deliciously lush and detailed. An added element of motorized canvases will reveal the complexity of the double-faced paintings on velvet, and add to the ever theatrical and mesmerizing style that is patently Woodruff.

David Korty Paintings Description:
Date: Time: Michael Kohn Gallery is pleased to present its first exhibition of paintings by David Korty. A Los Angeles based artist, his surroundings have served as an inspiration for his work. For this exhibition, Korty has expanded his subject matter to include scenes of New York, airports, and urban landscapes. His canvases are the culmination of those surroundings merged with his distinct style of abstract geometry.

On view will be a collection of paintings that portrays everyday objects and quotidian scenes and reveals a complex depiction of the geometric economy of the world. Korty's process is essential to the visual uniqueness of his work; he first captures his surroundings by photographing the ordinary and then transposes and interprets those scenes into his stylized renderings. His muted palette and hazy atmospheres invite the viewer to look closely at the painted surface and the graphic stye which makes Korty's paintings so resonant.

Listening to the Shades Description:
Date: Time: Nalini Malani: Listening to the Shades is a momentous exhibition of recent works by the internationally renowned Indian artist Nalini Malani. The exhibition is on view at Arario New York from September 18 through October 25, 2008. A reception for the artist will be held at the gallery on September 18 from 6-8 pm.

Nalini Malini was born in Karachi, which was part of India until the partition in 1947. Thereafter, Malini and her family found themselves living in another country—Pakistan. They then took the huge and difficult step of relocating to Calcutta. Malani is fiercely critical of the rationale and effects of partition and addresses some of its consequences in her work. Her career as a painter began in the late 1960s. Malani started to receive international acclaim in the 1980s for her figurative and politically charged work that raised issues of race, class and gender. While painting and drawing have remained fundamental to the artist’s practice, today she is also recognized for her work with new media, resulting in brilliantly multi-layered and immersive installations. Her art goes beyond the boundaries of conventional forms and narratives to initiate new dialogues.

The exhibition’s title echoes Malani’s most recent work, Listening to the Shades, comprising forty-two paintings with a sound component. This major installation will debut at Arario New York. Inspired by the writing of Christa Wolf on the ancient Greek myth of Cassandra, Malani reactivates a myth that she considers germane to our present moment: Cassandra, a woman whose insights are ignored and considered heretical, symbolizes the unfinished business of the women’s revolution.

Cole Sternberg: Oil Projects Description:
Date: Time: Cole Sternberg invites us to get lost in his intoxicating visions of luminous cityscapes and modernist graffiti art paintings with his new solo show “Oil Projects”, scheduled to open at The Celebrity Vault Gallery in Beverly Hills on Thursday, September 18th, 2008. Opening Reception from 6 – 9 pm. Following the Opening Reception will be an After Party from 9-12 am at the Crescent Hotel, where selected Sternberg works will also be on display.

Sternberg’s use of spray paint combined with heavily applied oils creates a blurred vision of flashing lights through a dark abyss. The sensations from the luminous neon lights of the city are only amplified by the blackness that surrounds them. His city scenes are reminiscent of a drunken night on the town, walking through a hazy dream, intoxicated by the vivacious nature of the city, drowning in the constant noise that echoes throughout.

Laden with socio-political undertones, Sternberg’s paintings convey our deepest fears in their thick coats of paint. “My show pictures two distinct components of urban life and sprawl. One is the blur of neon corporate branding and its chaotic affect on an otherwise dark night. The second is an apocalyptic collapse of urban society, with raging skies and desolate aged graffiti.”

Like layers of sound bites collaged one on top of the other, spray-painted words have been blackened out by his rapid brush strokes. Similar to the infamous style of Jean Michel Basquiat, every line and every stroke, every blacked out phrase, has meaning. Sternberg however takes the application of paint over text to another level, with seas of rich oil creating a stormy apocalyptic feel. “…the works in the show analyze the ironic mentality of humanity. I believe it is my strongest work yet.” - Cole Sternberg

"Duality of Humanity" Description:
Date: Time: SHEPARD FAIREY'S ONE MAN SHOW "DUALITY OF HUMANITY"
AT SAN FRANCISCO'S WHITE WALLS GALLERY, OPENING SEPTEMBER 13, 2008

Los Angeles, CA - August 1, 2008 - Shepard Fairey, the one-man art movement behind the nearly 20 year OBEY/Giant street art campaign and the equally ubiquitous Obama "HOPE/PROGRESS" posters, will be having a highly anticipated one-man show of new and recent original works at the White Walls Gallery in San Francisco for the month of September.

Over 100 pieces will go on display at White Walls in a timely new show called "Duality in Humanity." The show marks a bit of a departure for the artist, whose unique form of reverse propaganda emerged from the spirit of the punk movement. With this show, Shepard takes a step back from the 'calls to action' against mindless consumerism and war evidenced in previous shows like 1984ia, E Pluribus Venom and Imperfect Union. "The difference between this show and the previous ones is that now Obama is in the mix," Shepard said. His recent work reflects his own personal shift towards a new optimism, a direct result of his involvement with, and inspiration by, the powerful political ideals of Barack Obama.

The title of the show, "Duality of Humanity," is inspired by the peace-sign wearing US soldier in Vietnam, 'Joker,' in Brian DePalma's Full Metal Jacket. A central piece is a child with a gun in his hand and a flower in his hat. That theme of soldiers and weapons bearing peace signs, or peace signs comprised of military effects, runs through many pieces in the show. Environmental themes also appear in some pieces, illustrating the tenuous balance between our dangerously uncontrolled consumption of non-renewable resources, and our well-intentioned eco-concerns. Suffering and hope are seamlessly merged in a visual mash-up that defies expectations and easy answers.

"Duality of Humanity" includes larger mixed media pieces on paper that has been covered with carefully collaged Ephemera, self-printed patterns and found clippings from printed media. The backgrounds provide a seductive painterly texture and visual subtext, often allowing apropos words and images to bleed through the iconic images printed over them. The multiple layers create a sense of depth, but also bring in temporal elements through preserved newsclippings, historic images and vintage printing effects. It is the images in the foreground, however, that give the work its power. They are crisp and provocative, communicating in a way that is direct and clear.

Chris Mars Opening/ Booksigning Description:
Date: Time: Rock star, recluse, brother, activist. Artist. Chris Mars’ work graces the hallowed halls of museums throughout America and is tattooed on calves and biceps throughout the world. “Tolerance” is the long-awaited collection of his work.

Chris Mars was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1961 to parents Constance and Leroy Mars. He is the youngest of seven children. Mars’s eldest brother Joe suffered a so-called Nervous Breakdown in 1966 and was institutionalized at St. Cloud Mental Hospital. The impact of that event, along with Joe’s life-long struggle with Schizophrenia, set the groundwork for a life’s mission of championing society’s downtrodden and outcast. Mars hopes his work causes the viewer to question the nature of evaluation and labels, be it by investigating the meaning of beauty or by casting aside the exclusion of the meek, the forgotten, or the enemy.

Like many artists, Mars seeks to know Truth. In his canvases are villains and angels, though one’s initial demarcation may, as in life, prove false. Believing that truth comes through the educational exploration of a given subject, Mars offers in his work a particular truth exposed and defined through his unending personal scrutiny of self and of society and an amazing technical control of the medium.
