The Ultra-Realistic Paper Sculptures of Vincent Tomczyk

At first glance the work of Vincent Tomczyk appears to be normal ready-made objects.  However, each piece is carefully constructed almost entirely from different types of paper.  Yeah, paper.  You can’t sit on these chairs or slip into those shorts without ripping it.  In a way, this seems to be Tomczyk’s intention.  Tomczyk and his viewers investigate these objects by painstakingly rebuilding them without their utilitarian properties.  He says:

“Although my work can be categorized as realism, my intention is to distill the emotion of an object, then through expression, reconstruct it into my view of its essential self – free of function.” [via]

Sitting on the Fence with Sven Lamme

Sven Lamme seems to playfully sit on the fence, so to say, between art and design.  In collaboration with landscaper Terra Incognita, Lamme constructed these three “seating elements” throughout a nature preserve in the Netherlands.  They at once serve as kind of landmark for the natural surroundings as well as a means to passively interact with the environment.  Lamme also makes use of visual puns in the design of his seating elements.  The first seat a literal interpretation of sitting on the fence, and the third resembling a buoy – a reference to the lands elevation below sea level.

Design Month: Qui est Paul?

Qui est Paul? We may never truly know who he is but apparently he’s got very good taste in outdoor furniture. The French firm’s designs boasts bubbly, slick and upbeat pieces that fit just as well in a home as a five star resort. I especially love the Sardana seating that wraps around a tree and can be lit from the inside.

Design Month: Flux Chair

 

This chair literally just blew my mind. Excuse me while the popping sounds subside…. It folds flat and according to this description, “Flux Chairs can be stacked 21 chairs high in just one foot of space. For those with space limitations, the Flux Wall Strap makes it easy to store folded chairs against the wall and can hold up to six Flux Chairs at a time.” If you live in a small space, any space really, and love to entertain these chairs seem beyond ideal. They’re amazing!
