Argentina-native and -based artist Irana Douer‘s works are delightfully deceptive; often, simple lines and minimal color are combined to create works fraught with symbolism. Women are the stars of her productions. Many of her illustrations and sketches show hurt or sad, yet strong women.
Jennifer Davis is a painter based out of Minneapolis, Minnesota with, among other things, a great color palette, mixing muted hues with more vibrant pops of pink and yellow. Her paintings are delightfully quirky too. I mean, have you ever seen a skeleton wearing striped toe socks, or a purple goat sporting a multi-colored sweater? Well, you and I have now.
With a name like Daniel Danger, well, a certain excess of awesome is expected of you. Danger delivers. The product of an artistically-inclined family, Danger is an illustrator, printmaker, and musician working out of New England. His works feature mysterious figures wandering the midnight-shaded streets of cities in decay. Spirits rise in unison from old houses and barns where now dreams of daylight lie interred. Shadows loom, larger-than-life (or death?) in urban sprawl and twisted forest alike. Each piece tells its own dark tale.
“André da Loba was born in 1979 in Portugal, to a mama and a centaur. In a family of nine brothers he was the ugliest. His nose was very big, and still is. As a result, his parents sent him to join a sea circus”. His work has been published in a myriad of publications including the New York Times, Time Magazine, The New Yorker, Newsweek, and the Washington Post. ”Currently he lives in New York City, where he is secretly happy”.
Brecht Evens is a Brussels, Belgium based cartoonist and illustrator. He creates expressive comics that take you on a mystical adventure through a wonderland of seemingly normal places. As garden utopias manifest out of the back rooms of nightclubs and bars- a myriad of personal intimacies are revealed from behind the closed doors of apartment flats and town houses. His paintings and comics leave you with a resonating feeling comparable to having a near perfect night out in your favorite city.
Back in March B/D teamed up with Toyota Prius to bring you the Future Perfect Project. Due to certain circumstances beyond our control we couldn’t consider submissions from international artists. However that didn’t stop hundreds of loyal international B/D readers to send in work. We figured that the only honorable way to approach the situation would be to feature all of these artists day by day in a short series. For day numero uno we bring to you Tom Dorkin, a 21 year old illustrator from London who is quite creative when it comes to showing off the natural detail in decay. Maybe the only way our future will be perfect is if we realize our commonality in being decaying mammals and that we must seize the day rather than waste away.
We found Tokyo based illustrator, Kimiaki Yaegashi, on our B/D Flickr Pool and I have to say what a find! Kimiaki’s electrifying illustrations of sexual, surreal interactions between beautiful women, men, animals, and a chubby little girl is amazing. Her 3D, sexual, and wonderfully off-center styled would make a killer business card design.
