In the ‘Spin Series’ artist Paul Henry Ramirez addresses social and aesthetic issues with abstract paintings. Each painting is set on a turntable and the audience is invited to rotate the painting. Ramirez creates a collaborative relationship between viewer and artist by making his paintings interactive. This makes it possible for the viewer to find the ‘internal logics, tensions, and interactions that order the multiple parts of the constructed configurations’. I really enjoy the image of the painting as it is spinning, but also like the sexually implicit imagry that emerges from the paintings when they are static.
Nicholas Bohac is a San Francisco based artist who works with printmaking methods and acrylic based media. His two-dimensional paintings and drawings are an investigation of human influence on nature, and natures influence on humans. Bohac has created his own version of a modern day landscape, encouraging his audience to think about the ecological climate and human stweardship.
Alexis Semtner’s abstract paintings utilize optical illusion to distort the viewers spatial awareness. According to Semtner, her use of visual falsity is used to denote perception and draw attention to how ubiquitous the notion of hallucination is in the human mind. I like the comforting and almost calming colors juxtaposed to the disconcerting Escher-esque environments, I think that the combination works well to create a world of constantly changing perceptions.
I first met Juka Araikawa during my stint at UCLA as a teachers assistant for a drawing class. She was a quiet girl who had moved across the world to LA to study art. Even though she didn’t say much her work always stood out as some of my favorite in the class.
