André Kertész’s body warp in the 1930′s

André Kertész

André Kertész (1894 – 1985), was a Hungarian-born photographer known for his groundbreaking contributions to photographic composition and by his efforts in establishing and developing the photo essay. In the early years of his lengthy career, his then-unorthodox camera angles, and his unwillingness to compromise his personal photographic style, prevented his work from gaining wider recognition.

YACHT’s music video for “Psychic City (Voodoo City)”

YACHT is a Band, Belief System, and Business conducted by a duo with presence in of Marfa, Texas and Portland, Oregon, USA. All people are welcome to become members of YACHT. Some items on the YACHT Mission Statement include but are not limited to: “YACHT is about group consciousness. YACHT is about the individual man or woman. If you believe these assertions to be contradictory, consider the Triangle: it is both a collection of points and a shape…the Triangle is also a concept map between three points. But it is not merely a concept…YACHT encourages online dissemination of all things…YACHT IS NOT A CULT.”

It all sounds and looks mildly trite but sort of very genuine in its childlike and enthusiastically declared motto like kids declaring a new land for themselves on a treehouse. The video is shot with some incredible hi-def camera and it’s crispness makes it serious and funny at the same time. There’s also a really awkward (and not very appealing in my opinion) desert makeout scene towards the end.

Aquirax Uno

Aquirax Uno
Japanese designer, illustrator, painter Aquirax Uno’s work is characterized by fantastic visuals, capricious and sensuous line flow, flamboyant (and occasionally grotesque) eroticism, and frequent use of collage and bright colors. He was prominently involved with the Japanese underground art of 1960′s-1970′s, dabbling in theater, fashion, film and animation. His work reminds me of Aubrey Beardsley’s- morosely sensual women oozing and dripping with the promise of delightful death…I also found a really interesting interview designer Tara Sinn did with the artist himself on her blog.

Lina Scheynius

Lina Scheynius

Lina Scheynius has been one of my favorite photographers for a while now. The nostalgic hazy atmosphere that she creates in her photos really taps into my inner sappy-self. Her photos are always so honest, looking though her work is like looking back on photos of your past…except they’re not yours..and they look far more interesting than reality. I know it has been done before, but her point and shoot photos are some of the most beautiful and successful documentations of life that I’ve seen today. Scheynius has been working more with fashion photography, and I think she’s well suited for it because her work is incredibly romantic and she always makes the mundane fantastic.

Read an interview with Catlin Moore about her process of selecting artists, putting the exhibition together and more, as well as five mini interviews with each of the featured artists. In keeping with the theme “Fresh Perspectives,” we gave each artist the same three questions- with surprisingly different answers from each artist! Full article after the jump!

Kate Moross

Kate Moross

Kate Moross is a designer/illustrator based in London. She specializes in design and art direction in the music industry. Her style and work stand out because her graphics and colors are always simple and bold. Also, I think she’s responsible for the increased popularity of the triangle (ever since she adopted it as her logo). Whether you want to thank her or smack her for that you can’t deny that she has built up quite an impressive body of work. whether it be in the form of a tote bag, music video or signature clothing line for Topshop, Moross designs have become ubiquitous.
