Interview: Raphael Garnier

raphaelgarnier

Raphael Garnier is a digital cosmonaut, equally entranced by the flickering mystery emanating from Kirchner’s 18th century “magic lamps,” primordial symbology, and the dazzle-spaz of gif animations. Garnier finds just as much potential to explore new realms within the internet “as in the seabed.” In his travels, he has constructed a wondrous cabinet of curiosities from the binary and the bombastic, fixated firmly on both the future and the worship of magic from a near distant past.

Time in Retrospect: Damien Hirst

Nothing makes you reflect on another year’s passage like the dying flies, decomposing cow’s head, and animals infinitely suspended in their watery glass tombs of formaldehyde like Damien Hirst.

Beautiful/Decay recently “wrapped” up our Book 2: What a Mess! Release party at Synchronicity Gallery. The event was super fun, with the Beautiful/Decay team past & present in full force, including appearances by such former B/D intern superstars as Lyndsey Lesh, Greg Ruben and Alexis Kaneshiro! (Am I forgetting anyone?) The B/D team had a booth replete with gift wrap, the debut of Book 2 and more. Check out our Flickr page for images of the bash!

Momento Mori Watches

In thinking about time and the passage of it for the upcoming new year, I stumbled upon a really cool blog, Wachismo, that’s dedicated entirely to timekeeping pieces (clocks and the like.) He has a full section for memento moris clocks, a personal fascination of mine. The title translates literally to “Remember you must die,” and remind us of the iminence and swiftness of impending death. Yay! Some beautiful/strange/haunting clocks below.

Steve Poxson takes hyper-realistic photography to a whole new level by using a scanner to create his work. Kinda takes all those “hey, look at my hand!” scans to a whole new level.

Clay Bells Ring

In life, there’s always one goober buck-toothed bell who messes it up for the rest of the dignified, monocle-rocking mustachioed bells. As Will Vinton animates- the solution? Get a slingshot.
