Mark Schoening has been busy in the studio lately working on a brand spanking new series of paintings and a new sculpture for a show opening this weekend at Blythe Projects in Culver City, Ca. He was kind enough to document the process and give you a sneak peak.

Mark is primarily known for his action packed exploding/imploding paintings but as of late he has been building web like sculptures set in minimalist restraints.

Each of these boxes function like their own individual universe, eventually being filled with a layered web of color shooting out from every direction.

I show this photo only to point out how organized Mark is. Look at his tape holding mechanism. Oh and don’t forget the special pouches to the right for his scissors! I’m jelous mark… very, very jealous. All my tapes are usually all over the floor and I can never find my scissors.

Mark hard at work with the above mentioned scissors. If this was my studio visit this picture would show me scrambling around looking scissors in a pile of paper instead of focusing on the task at hand.

A collection of completed paintings. These are some of the first to have color introduced to them.
Mark deep within the art web.

There is a lot of nice interaction between the paintings and the sculpture. I could even see a show where the paintings and sculptures were combined into one piece.

And the finished product! Make sure to stop by Marks opening and see the work in person.
