Baptiste Debombourg

baptiste debombourg manbaptiste debombourg staples This post goes out to all the 9-5ers stuck behind a desk, staring at the white office walls and pretending to be busy, whenever the boss walks by.  If there was no boss to check up on you, what would you do inside that office?  I see you looking at your nearest stapler.  Baptiste Debombourg has lived out your fantasy.  Baptiste created these large scale figures with over 35,000 staples.  Now someone needs to follow in Baptiste’s footsteps and make a paper clip tapestry.

POLISHED / CLEAN / STICKY / DIRTY

Picture 1Recognize the above image?  Maybe the name Jesse Auersalo rings a bell?  Give up?  We featured Jesse in Issue Y, back when B/D was still a magazine… before we upgraded to our fancy limited edition book format.  Well Jesse is giving a talk at AIGA/NY on Wednesday March 3rd, 6:30-8pm.  This is Jesse’s first ever U.S. presentation!  Be sure to check it out if you’re in the area.  Also, you can go to our online shop and pick up a copy of Issue Y or grab the t-shirt Jesse designed.  Just for fun, you can see more of Jesse’s illustrations after the jump.

Matthias van Arkel

DSCN2126_2

One of my favorite artists, Matthias van Arkel, (who will be appearing in Book 3, btw) recently designed some amazing fabrics and a site-specific painting for the Stockholm Furniture Fair. Matthias usually creates these spaghetti-esque, rubbery abstract-expressionist sculptural-paintings. This aesthetic translates nicely to these flat works…has a very contemporary-Swedish clean feel, beautiful!

Grycja Erde

goat contraptionI am truly a sucker for anything of an absurd nature.  I also love the classic style of old propaganda posters.  So when I stumbled upon the collages of Miss Grycja Erde, twas a happy moment.  The nature of Grycja’s collages made me assume she was an older artist, since they have a mature approach to absurbity (in my opinion).  But I was surprised to find out she’s just 23!  Enjoy these tasty treats coming to you from Ukraine.

William Lamson

Picture 11

I know. Anyone can string banana-hostages to a perfectly innocent tree; the gesture is simple enough, but who ever would’ve thought to do this? The playfulness, exuberance and creativity in William Lamson’s little “interventions” make you reconsider space, how we interact with it, and how we see the world. I just imagine attempting to climb to the top of these slippery slapstick yellow rungs only to discover what I’m dealing with is not a playstructure tree but…bananas. And if that’s not enough, check out the vid after the jump that shows the artist in a Hell-raiser style mask, made entirely of bananas with dynamite wicks on the end. One by one he lights them, causing them to explode in Chiquita’s ultimate pimple/fruit popping extravaganza.
