Cathy Opie has created a stunning new selection of portraits exploring lesbian identity in her latest body of work, “Girlfriends.” The women in her portraits range from Madonna and Angelina Jolie’s ex-girlfriend Jenny Shimizu, to Le Tigre’s JD Samson. Both honest and alluring, her photography recontextualizes the paradigm of femininity. Currently on view at New York’s Barbara Gladstone Gallery through April 24.

Here’s a beautiful video from Gary Breslin featuring music from Bix Sigurdsson. Below is Gary’s statement about the piece.

“A meditation on green light – inspired by the dense horizon of lights found on the top of cityscapes. Specifically the red blinking lights for warning aircrafts which have always felt to me like some kind of living, breathing ecosystem. Continuing my fascination with geographies constructed or revealed by light during the night, I started thinking more about the “breathing” lights as rhythms.” – Gary Breslin
