Anya Janssen’s Hyper Portraits

January 31st, 2011 by

Ana Janssen’s erie hyperrealistic paintings remind me of the calm before a storm. In most of the work young teenagers sit still and stare at the viewer with an intense gaze while various animals sit on their shoulders, lay in their lap, or attempt to take a bite out of the figures hand.

These are so haunting and unsettling to look at but so captivating at the same time. Truly beautiful.

The technique is really amazing but takes a back seat to the haunting subject matter. Really captivates and disturbs the viewer. You can’t help but be engaged whether you like it or not.

Wow, these portraits are really amazing! Some of them make me think of some of the elf or hobbit characters from Lord of the Ring :)
