Martin Eder’s Erotic Kitsch Nightmares (NSFW)

Martin Eder is a German artist based in Berlin, whose nightmarish and perverse paintings abound with contradicting romantic cliches and infantile desires; his work displays lolitas in pornographic poses that are montaged with skycaps, warm bedroom interiors, and saccharine, girly kitsch that includes oversized crying kittens, giant candy, songbirds, fluffy poodles, puffy clouds, and cuddly white bunnies. Eder works exclusively from photographic references, making full use of high contrast and flat shadows and edging subjects with cyan and magenta. His paintings look imperfect and rushed in places, as if he works on his paintings only until they seem convincingly realistic enough. This slightly unpolished quality facilitates the paintings’ exploitative, creepy aesthetic and especially affects his female subjects, making them feel nondescript; the consequences of this purposeful lack of care in turn references the faceless and aggregative nature of pornography. A recurrent aura of seediness and the slightly distorted proportions of Eder’s subjects are reminiscent of the work of German Expressionist Otto Dix, although the anonymity of Eder’s subjects is a theme not reflected in those of Dix.

Edger is represented by Eigen + Art Gallery and Hauser + Wirth. In addition to being a painter, he plays in his own experimental rock band under the name Richard Ruin ed Les Demoniaques.

perhaps a good example of a work that contests certain norms or standards. I am certain some will try to regulate and apply judicial views to uphold whatever existing conventions or so called notion of right/wrong. Bravo!

I think this art is disturbing but in mostly a good way that clenches the curiosity of having a being able to accept what is normally abnormal. I intact have such a broad accepting point of view that I find these interesting. I’m fine with nudity and blood. What I do find is that some pictures seem to be lacking something. I see that there is a message behind some of these but without more detail I cannot help but see less in some pictures. Then it’s just disturbing in a not so interesting way like I’ve stayed. So the pictures I see as disgusting are just of that to me at least. I am not interested in sexuality so is hard to understand some of them. I’ve always found sexuality to be uncomfortable. I like to critique art. I really would like meaning to finder pleasure in these paintings. Or in another way of viewing pleasure Id like there to be so much confusion that I’m facinated with the mystery. The colors transitioning into realistic formations from unrealistic draws like expression. Expressing something that only some can see and understand. Thus in closing an artist at work in splendor. Crazy yet brave. A step into the mind sort of.
