Beautiful/Decay began as a black and white photocopied ‘zine in 1996 in the suburbs of Northern Virginia. Growing up, I had a number of different interests, from fine art, punk rock, graffiti, skateboarding and beyond. At the time, I was an emerging artist myself, trying to get my work seen. Opportunities for young artists were scarce, and many magazines only embraced one kind of art, but never reflected the cross-section of genres I was interested in.

Bored to tears by my conservative surroundings, I ended up creating B/D as an accessible way for me to document and bring together a new community of like-minded artists and designers. I wanted to provide a DIY-inspired forum that celebrated the burgeoning, multifaceted creative scene I was a part of. One that embraced punk rock shows and museum retrospectives alike.

Since then, Beautiful/Decay has expanded into a three part creative project to provide new outlets to showcase emerging work: our flagship Beautiful/Decay book series, an artist T-shirt line and a daily updated website. Through these avenues, I want to promote collaboration with a new generation of independent artists.

It’s my hope that Beautiful/Decay will inspire and rally artists & designers everywhere to join our community, connect with each other and above all, continue to create, whatever form that may take.

The Beautiful/Decay book series is a full color, ad-free 164 page limited edition publication that is released 3 times a year. It highlights the best and brightest from today’s emerging and established creative world, creating original content, imagery, and collaborative special inserts.

Beautiful/Decay Apparel is a limited edition T-shirt line in collaboration with the artists and designers featured on the pages of our book. We work directly with each artist to create one-of-a-kind graphics in order to provide our readers with wearable collectables by some of their favorite artists.

The Beautiful/Decay website is a daily updated creative web portal that features exclusive content ranging from artist interviews, contests, and behind the scenes looks at the goings-on here at the B/D office and other creative establishments, artist studios and more around the world.
