Kim Gordon – Performing/Guzzling

Kim Gordon performing/guzzling

If there is one band that I associate with the art world it would have to be Sonic Youth. Over the last 30 years the band has collaborated with such blue chip artists such as Mike Kelley, John Cage, Yoko Ono, and Christian Marclay. So it’s no surprise that Kim Gordon, one of Sonic Youth’s founding members has just released a book of paintings and photographs with Rizzoli Books and Nieves Titled “Performing/Guzzling.”

Performing/Guzzling functions more as a hard bound artist journal than a monograph filled with page after page of Gordon’s ghost like watercolors, text paintings, lyrics/poetry, and photography. The watercolor works are by far the most accomplished, inspired by on-stage performances where the faces in the audience become a dreamy and ethereal blur of color.

The first printing of the book will be in a limited edition of 3,000 copies, with each containing a signed print by Kim Gordon. Performing/Guzzling is a must have book for both artist book enthusiasts and Sonic Youth fans alike!

Julio B Esq’s Bouduoir

Julio B Esq photography

I found Julio B Esq’s Bouduoir series during my weekly stroll through the B/D Creative Pic Pool. Julio’s photos walk a fine line and could quickly be dismissed as shocking snapshots of drunk/high people taking part in bizarre acts. However I think there is something that sets his work apart from all the shock and awe Terry Richardson wannabes that deserves a closer look. When I first saw these photos I immediately thought about the infamous Calvin Klein ads that were scrutinized for their basement kiddie porn appeal. I can see Julio’s photos taking place in the same old basement as the CK shoots complete with cheap wood paneling and 30 year old shag carpet. Creepy or not Julio’s photos have an erie calmness to them that separates them from the pack. I liked the series even more once I read his text about the inspiration for the set:

“Historically, the boudoir formed part of the private suite of rooms of a lady, for bathing and dressing, adjacent to her bedchamber, being the female equivalent of the male cabinet. In later periods, the boudoir was used as a private drawing room, and was used for other activities, such as embroidery or entertaining intimate acquaintances.”

Crude The Real Price of Oil

If you don’t want to shout “FUCK CHEVRON & TEXACO” at the end of watching Crude I’ll give you a dollar. I’m disgusted by yet another example of greedy corporate companies taking advantage of the innocent and the poor. Okay I’m done venting. Here is what Crude is about.

Three years in the making, this cinéma-vérité feature from acclaimed filmmaker Joe Berlinger (Brother’s Keeper, Paradise Lost, Metallica: Some Kind of Monster) is the epic story of one of the largest and most controversial environmental lawsuits on the planet. The inside story of the infamous “Amazon Chernobyl” case, Crude is a real-life high stakes legal drama, set against a backdrop of the environmental movement, global politics, celebrity activism, human rights advocacy, the media, multinational corporate power, and rapidly-disappearing indigenous cultures. Presenting a complex situation from multiple viewpoints, the film subverts the conventions of advocacy filmmaking, exploring a complicated situation from all angles while bringing an important story of environmental peril and human suffering into focus.
