I first met Sherin Guirguis at USC while giving a talk about B/D. Sherin teaches in the design department so I assumed that she was primarily a graphic designer. Over the years we’ve run into each other here and there but never really visited each others studio. A few months back Sherin stopped by my studio to check out some work. When I went to return the favor I didn’t find stacks of design work but a studio full of both paintings and sculpture that were at once precise and technical while organic and fluid. Here are some shots from the studio visit.
Interesting presentation at the MOMA about the infamous Guerilla Girls. If you’re not familiar with them here’s a blurb from their website.
“We’re a bunch of anonymous females who take the names of dead women artists as pseudonyms and appear in public wearing gorilla masks. We have produced posters, stickers, books, printed projects, and actions that expose sexism and racism in politics, the art world, film and the culture at large. We use humor to convey information, provoke discussion, and show that feminists can be funny. We wear gorilla masks to focus on the issues rather than our personalities. Dubbing ourselves the conscience of culture, we declare ourselves feminist counterparts to the mostly male tradition of anonymous do-gooders like Robin Hood, Batman, and the Lone Ranger. “
A swinging Mexican fiesta goes bad when a very hungry rotten avocado crashes the party and starts devouring the guests… Vegeterrible is a film about the last tomato’s fight for survival. If this is what goes on in my fridge when the door is closed I’m never eating again!
Everyone loves a good behind the scene video that gives you a sneak peak into the artists creative process. The above video showcases the tedious process of stop motion. the means are simple but the final product is a lo-fi meets high concept video could have been made by a big budget studio. More info about the project after the jump!
Sex and drugs go hand in hand so it’s no surprise that this trippy animation by Vince Collins has equal parts sex and acid flashback induced morphing. Ps. it was made in 1983 which makes it even better!
I’m a few days late but I should have posted this video by Spy Films for Valentines day. It explores a fleeting moment between two strangers, revealing their brief connection in a hyper real fantasy. Kind of romantical if you ask me. You can also watch the making of the video after the jump!
