Los Angeles-based artist Kevin Appel‘s Screen series shows trivial nature photography layered with coloured, transparent materials in different graphic shapes. Appel uses a range of media – acrylic, ink, enamel and print – to achieve this effect, in order to distort the photo by adding a ‘screen’ of new material. More images from the series here:
Scottish artist Anna Geerdes‘s paintings focus on map landscapes, as she presents fields stitched together and filled with ants for a fantastical and surreal series entitled The Utopia Project. More images from the series, which was featured at the Royal Scottish Academy in 2010, after the jump.
Dutch-born Lauren Hillebrandt‘s photographs objects and reframes them in other-worldy, digitally-made landscapes. Her latest series, Flat Landscapes, presents various ordinary objects surrounded by bright panels of color to subvert the norms of still-life art, and recently won Foam Magazine‘s still life contest.

Illinois-born artist Chad Wys‘s latest series Readymades ’11 consists of mixed media pieces that deconstruct found objects – such as frames, china and porcelain – by distorting and adding paint. The playfulness of the work completely reinvents the objects to make the familiar completely unfamiliar whilst adding new layers to bric-a-brac found around the home. More after the jump.
James Clarkson‘s collages take photographic images of objects from old art catalogues and treats them as a blank canvas to add abstract paint-strokes and form new art. The Sheffield-based artist focuses on the contradictions between high-art, design and mass-production; demoting the artworks of the photography to mere found objects in order to explore new forms and meaning. Montreal-based artist Jon Rafman‘s series New Age Demanded is dominated by a distorted, bodiless figure made from textures and skin taken from paintings by artists – such as Gerhard Richter and Franz Kline – and made anew. With the aid of photoshop, Rafman collages numerous different elements onto the deformed classical bust and its background to mix old with new, high art with low art, and craft with technology. Nicolas Kennedy Sitton‘s Twisted series uses photographic manipulation to distort the architecture of San Francisco. The photographer adds concentric circles to the images to form new shapes, with the buildings seemingly folding and toppling into themselves.
