"UNFINISHED ELIXIR," 2009

Yusuke Ishikawa captures “life” in the shining and dazzling facets of his paintings. I’ve always been fascinated with diamonds and crystals and find myself spending hours on the internet just looking at them for no particular reason (it’s not because I’m a girl). There’s something about the hard edges in these paintings that look perfect to the eye but you know that they could never be as precise as the real thing- the element of possible human error and uncertainty makes these paintings soft and interesting as well as beautiful.

"Spring is colder than winter"

Anton Gerasimenko‘s single paged web-works uses functionalities and traits of the internet browser in surprising ways. He turns the aesthetically mundane objects which are essential to any sort of online activity, tool bars and radio buttons, into subjects of these small sites. Each page has few to no links- when there are links, they transform the screen into a maze of pop ups, and when there are none the window seems to become a movie screen.

Hey Studio

Hey Studio
Barcelona based Hey Studio makes really graphically strong work that is both socially and aesthetically aware. Check our their work after the jump, especially their branding project for Intermón Oxfam. The aim was to renew the image of Oxfam and create an emotional link between the association and its young target. To create a more visual language, the letters are converted into illustrations, which increases the signification of words and create a own graphical personality, direct and reinvidicative. Titles are reduced to one single word to communicate quicker and more directly. The all identity is based on one single black colour printed on different colour papers, to facilitate the production and lower costs.

"Rational exploration of the undersea : the map," 2006

Philippe Ramette is an artist who uses two major media to express himself: with installation and sculpture, creating impossibly surreal objects and situations often using nonsense humor, and with the turning of his own body clothed in a black suit into a surreal situation, just one component of a landscape so extravagant and visually stunning.

Yusaku Kamekura

Yusaku Kamekura (1915-1997) was one of the pioneers of Japanese graphic design who was at the forefront in promoting graphic design as an essential factor of modern society, culture and art, and whose achievements helped to establish the reputation of Japanese graphic design internationally.

The symbol and poster designs for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics were Kamekura’s best-known work. The Tokyo Olympic symbol is a powerful, concise design, while the posters capture the dynamism of athletes. The poster design also incorporated photos, marking the first time that a photograph was used in an Olympic poster. Other well-known poster designs include Hiroshima Appeals, a poetic image of falling, burning butterflies.

UROGENITAL FOLDS

Pinar Yoldas is a designer, artist, architect, and organic chemistry enthusiast. Her work is a reflection of her interests in neuroscience, evolution, gender studies and science fiction. In her work she explores new materials and new production tools in order to blend conventional media with digital media. I remember seeing these sculpture/organisms (often resembling the female anatomy) at the UCLA Design | Media Arts (both of our alma maters) 2nd Year grad show Exit Strategies. I was significantly and equal parts titillated and fascinated at these creatures, seemingly inanimate yet surreal-y possessing life like qualities. We’re also throwing a fundraiser party for her injuries and medical bills from multiple biking related accidents tonight in Echo Park (come come!). Check out the flyer after the jump!

Poster Company

I’m not exactly sure of how I feel about these digital expulsions by the Poster Company. I think my reaction came in 3 stages: first oscillating between questioning the validity of their artfulness, then awe at the convoluted jungle of pixels, then back to confusion again.
