Musician Jun Seba, also known as Nujabes passed away late last month after a fatal car crash at age 36. Why it took almost a month later for everyone to catch wind of it, I’m not sure but, pest in peace. You were so young and so amazingly talented. This video above was circulating the web for a bit- “Luv (sic) pt. 2” Nujabes featuring Shing02 and directed by Sou Ootsuki. Doesn’t watching it makes you feel alive? In a really breathtakingly normal way?
I am curating, along with lovely cohort Megan Daalder, a video/performance titled Videos Collide in Real 3D Space (probably the most apt title ever) art show debuting at Los Angeles loft space Five Thirty Three Gallery next weekend. What does a video/performance art show consist of, you ask? First off, we’d like to pose this question: when any and all media is available online, what added value, if any, do physical exhibition spaces offer? The artists (coming to LA from as far as Berlin, Canada, and Colorado) participating in this LIVE (!!) event offer their bodies as a mode of communication between media, the audience, and performance. There will be choreographed large-scale projected animations, a projector used in a way that you’ve never thought, 7ft tall cacti sculptures, the augmented reality “future of theater”, a tribute to Karl Sims though body slamming imitations, video-game playing taxidermy animatronics, and general havoc breaking and re-building of general theater conventions. The relationship between you and screen will have never seemed so real and and so much of an experience. I’ll be putting up some interviews with the artists soon, look out for them!
Check out the details after the jump, as well as artist Jeremy Bailey’s promo vid above.
Beautiful colors with the thickness and brightness of animation cell art, Chinese artist Zhou Fan’s works are inspired from childhood dreams of jellyfish parades in the sky falling to the ground to become mushrooms. She’s found that these dreams which have left a deep impression on her also capture more of her focus than reality. I don’t blame her!
London-based street artist D*Face dropped into Hollywood, Los Angeles to pay his regards: “face lifts, fools gold and plastic surgery arghhhh thats [his] sort of city.” The 6 feet or so tall statue sits proud atop one of Runyon’s highest peaks, watching over the land as a lone protector of the things mentioned above. If you’re in need of a jog or a hike, go check it out. Not sure if it’s still there though but it’s worth a try!
New internet toy of the day! Big Ass Message lets you send big ass messages (though it’s a little bit of a passive aggressive way of letting fellow netizens know how you feel?) such as this one. This is not my personal message…you can customize your message in a variety of ways: magic (this nutty flashy thing I uploaded), Pepsi, etc. Pretty fun. Via Today and Tomorrow.
Edit: Bjorn didn’t make the gif, not sure where it came from! Whoever made it must have really meant it & went through the effort since his program doesn’t generate automatic gifs…
Since Japanese photographer Kimiko Yoshida “fled [her] homeland to escape the mortifying servitude and humiliating fate of Japanese women, she seeks to take a feminist stance in protest against contemporary cliches of seduction” and the general stereotyped portrayal of women-hood. Her self portraits transform and that to her is the ultimate value of work.
