Ali Smith’s Abstractions

If you’re trying to cut back on caffeine, try replacing it with Ali Smith‘s paintings; they are pure visual energy.  “With their rough edges, fractured compositions and unpredictable scale-shifts, the L.A. artist paints energetic pictures whose wild swipes and slashes are not expressive — in any way, shape or form. Rather than standing in as authentic emblems of inner turmoil or heartfelt emotions, the whiplash gestures in Smith’s paintings take on lives of their own.” – Los Angeles Times

Curiot’s Mexican Murals

Curiot is a Mexico City based artist who combines indigenous and street art to make some incredible, mythical murals. I would recommend making the trip south to see some his murals in person; it’s 100% worth it. If you get there and can’t find any, you might be able to pick up some of his sculptures at La Vamp skateboard shop in La Roma.

Photography By Hanna Putz

Hanna Putz is an artist out of Vienna who contorts and un-poses her models to make striking photographs of equally striking people. Her camera seems to mummify the models, and in their lifelessness they are incredibly compelling. ( via )

Stephanie Gonot’s Modern Still Life Photography

Stephanie Gonot‘s takes the classical still life and replaces fruit, flowers, and skulls with fanta, lunch meat, and ice cream. The results are clean and funny and a totally great time. Right now she is working on a bi-weekly column called “Food Mood” for the Italian magazine Red Milk where she takes fashion photographs as inspiration for her photographs of food. It also is a joy.

Throwable Panoramic Ball Camera

Young German engineer Jonas Pfeil recently developed the throwable panoramic ball camera which, as the name implies, is a ball which is programmed to take a complete panorama when it reaches the apex of its toss, with the thirty six (36) cell phone cameras implanted into its body. However, like most exciting ideas the camera-ball isn’t available for sale and looking for sponsors. If you have an enormous inheritance you’re sitting on and don’t know what do with, back Jonas’ camera ball so we can all see the world from new angles! ( via )

Winnie Truong’s Hairy Drawings

Winnie Truong’s drawings are at once intricate, interesting, and funny. Fittingly, she has a lot of people recognizing her talent. Not only is she featured with big beautiful drawings and an interview in our Book 7 humor issue, she has a show at Galerie Trois Points from now until November 10. So, if you’re a fan, i’d suggest an impulsive Montreal vacation and picking up our Book 7 for plane reading. Happy travels!

Video Watch: Kirsten Lepore’s Stop Motion Animation

Due to the horrifying amount of time it takes, stop motion animation is something of a dying art these days. Luckily, though, Kirsten Lepore is out there keeping it alive and keeping it real. I’ve been a huge fan of her work for a while now. If you enjoy animation, colors, laughter, or can at least appreciate someone spending thousands and thousands of sweat and tear filled hours to make something five to ten minutes long for an uncertain audience, then you might just be a fan too. Watch some of Kirsten’s greatest hits after the jump!
