Back in March B/D teamed up with Toyota Prius to bring you the Future Perfect Project.  Due to certain circumstances beyond our control we couldn’t consider submissions from international artists. However that didn’t stop hundreds of loyal international B/D readers to send in work. We figured that the only honorable way to approach the situation would be to feature all of these artists day by day in a short series. For day numero uno we bring to you Tom Dorkin, a 21 year old illustrator from London who is quite creative when it comes to showing off the natural detail in decay. Maybe the only way our future will be perfect is if we realize our commonality in being decaying mammals and that we must seize the day rather than waste away.

If Ellie Cryer weren’t focusing on drawing she’d be chasing storms or spotting planes, both of which occupations are probably in high demand seeing as the recent events in Alabama and Pakistan (yes, us killing Osama means we should be on an even higher terror alert). Luckily, despite the allure, her focus seems to be on the drawing board where she brings together an exotic mix of color with human emotion attached to nature and other surreal elements. Robert Connett‘s stab at humanity through sea creature and insect inspiration makes for one confusing trip. Meshed with outlandish psychedelic flair the creatures of each painting truly come alive and scenes of money missiles and nuclear waste bring clarity to the confusion.

It’s pretty fun discovering the fetus shapes in each of these sangria colored pieces of wrinkled fabric. I know, that probably sounds weird but Canan Cengel really deserves all praises for her eye on detail, creating the perfect positioning and shadowing for her aptly titled project: f. Yesterday on our Twitter we got some nice podcast suggestions, most of which were Hip-Hop oriented — shout out to all the heads out there that support B/D. To extend on the topic, I thought it would be nice to highlight the talented Steve Smith (an illustrator, animator, and all around video guy). Steve recently put together a short animated flick for the Stones Throw video contest, more specifically for the late great, J Dilla.  Smith’s video for the classic Donuts cut “Geekdown”  has been getting an insane amount of rotation since last weeks release, so if you haven’t checked it out yet do yourself a favor.

If you haven’t been hiding under a rock for the past few days (I know, everyone talking about hockey or basketball playoffs may make your reconsider) then you know that Los Angeles graffiti guru Revok was arrested on his way to Ireland from LAX and sentenced to 6 months in jail for vandalism within LA County. Since the news broke there has been an abundance of support pouring out from the community as well as close friend Askew 1.  The New Zealand artist and director has decided that his recent Revok dedicated mural would be perfect to start selling prints of in benefit for his legal fund. Lee Gainer attempts to question what we all constantly question ourselves, and that is true beauty. What is true beauty? Are they the faces we are asked to notice on billboards, TV, postcards, magazines, etc? Is it something we can buy and physically manipulate ourselves for? In her series, Frankenlovely, Lee Gainer asks us to observe the faces that have been advertised as “true beauty,” and reflect.
