Korean artist Sung-Myung Chun creates eerie sculptures of young boys wearing his face who are usually in a situation that revolves around drama. He works with his life experiences through these sculptures of himself, and presents it to us cinematically by freezing them in moments of great reflection, violence, fatigue, etc – much like in T.V. shows or movies.

Cezar Berger

Screen shot 2010-09-28 at 1.21.21 PM

Cezar Berger, a Brazil based illustrator/ graphic designer, creates these incredibly saturated, bold, and grotesque drawings. Looking through these, it makes me think of meat and candy being digested together inside a carcass of a circus clown.

We are enjoying some of New York based artist Austin Power’s recent work. His focus on the human expression, and his interest in wanting to fully understand another human being has us interact with his work by filling us up with empathy.

Hong Chun Zhang

I have always enjoyed Kansas-based Chinese artist Hong Chun Zhang’s work, as I am also obsessed with hair. But her recent series of non-representational portraiture between Hong Chun Zhang and her twin sister is what I believe to be her best work so far. Charcoal drawings on long paper scrolls to accentuate the length and feel of their most noticeable characteristic.

Sean Fader’s background in performance had a heavy hand on the focus of his photography. His consistently conceptually strong pieces of work usually deal with the identity of his self, and the self perceived by those around him. What originally drew me into his work was his series, I Want To Put You On, where he explores the idea of becoming the people he personally admires.

Run Wrake

If you attended one of the previous annual Animation Shows, you may have seen Run Wrake’s short animation “Rabbit” (and me!) From the show, Run Wrake’s film was one of my favorites. He used elements from the classic Dick and Jane books to weave an equally classic tale of greed and it’s horrible consequences. I love how, just like in the Dick and Jane books, everything in every scene is accurately labeled.

Pes

It is very bad that I am writing about PES today, going into his website, watching his very entertaining and creative videos.. while I am at work here at B/D. It is all very distracting. I love how he finds use for any random object into something recognizable – yet not immediately obvious. I would have never thought of clown cake decorations to stand in for explosions. I could watch these all day.
