Jeremy Geddes

Jeremy Geddes
is an incredibly cinematic painter. His realistically painted images offer an overwhelming amount of drama through the use of not just aesthetic composition and image, but through concept as well. His recent series feature an astronaut exploring Earth. It’s creatures, buildings, landscapes, etc. Hinting towards the idea of the human alienation within our own environment.

Nathan James

web_coinkydink

London based artist Nathan James argues the idea that mass media and materialism can deliver the kind of leisure and happiness it promises but at the expense of one’s humanity. His photo based paintings are of young, trend-oriented people who are interrupted with strips of neon, cuts, graphics, typography, etc.

I am really enjoying painter Saeko Takagi’s recent series of portraits. The way she allowed her paints to move around, and the eyes on some of these guys goes right through you.

Do Ho Suh

karma

New York based Korean artist, Do Ho Suh, creates beautifully detailed installations where he constantly has us question the identity of the individual in modern day society. Those of you who live here in Los Angeles, might have seen a few of his sculptures at LACMA where he worked with the idea of the clashing of culture and identity most Korean-Americans face by crashing a traditional Korean house into a modern day American house. Inside, traditional Korean furniture spilling into various rooms of the American house, all mixing into one chaotic mess. I have always genuinely enjoyed the way Do Ho Suh communicates his concepts, and his painfully close attention to detail.

Cai-Guo Qiang

New York based artist, the theatrical Cai-Guo Qiang, is yet another artist I dream of to meet one day. He is mostly known for his gunpowder explosions, where the guided impact of exploded gunpowder creates beautiful marks on the paper it is placed over. Proof how beauty and violence are sometimes intertwined with each other, a concept Cai-Guo works with often.

Jason Holley

biggie

Los Angeles based illustrator Jason Holley creates beautiful illustrations that often resemble intricate, old-timey medical drawings but with a certain twist. His illustrations have a sense of decay, as if he attaches the age of these styles onto his work as well. It appears dirty, but the close attention to detail, space, and color really pulls his work into something gorgeous.

I had Jason Holley as a teacher of mine over at Art Center College of Design. He wasn’t an easy professor, but that is because he really pushes us to pass our established potential. He is an amazing person to learn from.

Baby Was A Black Sheep

We received a ‘zine today from one of our previously featured photographers, Elle Perez. He even sent us a very sweet thank you note in which he offered to buy us coffee if we are ever in town. The images in the ‘zine are from his series Ghettopunk. Incredibly striking shots! It’d be cool if Elle made postcards of them…I’d love to mail some out to my friends.

Jenny Saville

Oxford, England based artist Jenny Saville, is frightening in how she is so good in what she does. Her paintings always make me feel uncomfortable, and in that way, seduced as well. She is mostly known for her paintings of large, fleshy women that quite often appear similar to landscapes or a huge slab of meat. It’s a desire of mine to one day see her work in person. Amir has, and apparently photographic records of her work does not do it justice.
