The Monster That Haunts My Dreams

The Monster That Haunts My Dreams, 2008

Canadian Melissa P. maintains Mafia-Hunt which documents neat findings via the Internet, but it should also be known that she has an online portfolio devoted to her own fantastic work! I especially love her kooky characters and equally fun, hand drawn geometric shapes. More great drawings and collages after the jump!

Nelson Garrido

Nelson Garrido

Right off the bat, Venezuelan Nelson Garrido states the following: “To know limits is to begin to know that one does not have limits.” His work, brash and unapologetic, throws together Catholicism and American consumer culture, yielding incredibly fascinating results. Actually, to call his photographs “fascinating” would be an understatement. We’ll go with “riotous” after seeing Jesus depicted with three jumbo penises!

And for those with a strong stomach, check out one of his blog posts entitled “La Gruta de la Virgen.” You have been warned! This project in particular goes along with his passion for showcasing concepts deemed unacceptable by society.

Jason Maloney

halfof1Half of Everything is Fair…

Jason Maloney’s work is clever and oh so true. His paintings and drawings obviously stem from events in his past, but when transformed into these amazing pieces everyone can relate to them. Maloney is known as a “Pop Surrealist” who received formal training in painting and drawing at Cal State Fullerton.  His work can easily be identified by his consistent use of cut outs, wide range of bright colors, and attention to detail.  Skateboard graphics from the 1980′s, horror films, and heavy metal music inspired Maloney throughout his life and is probably the reason why he has recently been doing graphic work for clothing and skateboard products. I find a lot of his paintings and drawings very personally inspiring. I can’t help but look at all the details in each piece and all I want to do after looking at his work is CREATE.

Jason Maloney has also painted some public murals and currently draws and paints in Newport Beach, CA.

Will Ainley

Hairy Beast

Hairy Beast

Will Ainley is bringing weird back! His illustrations are all about creatures with spindly arms, crazy teeth, and funky personalities. You have to wonder what a conversation might be like with one of them; they seem like they could be friendly, maybe just misunderstood, but sweet. His portfolio consists mainly of pencil illustrations and vector work, sometimes together, sometimes separate; Ainley’s Prog Rock Monster is a cool example of how he drafts and produces his creatures, down to the last detail. He’s got a great sense of color, and adds a lot of character to his illustrations by exploring line theory, texture, and distortion. More after the jump!

Nik Daum

The Inventor of Cross Dressing & MODE V

The Inventor of Cross Dressing & MODE V

The figure on the left is a product of Nik Daum‘s imagination, and I feel like that’s exactly where it takes you, into some imaginary world. Cool colors, awkward angles, this piece is definitely a reflection of his own personal aesthetic, best summed up by himself in his bio on his website – which I highly recommend you read! And if you’re up for some stalking, he’s got 5 webcams in different parts of his house, tracking his every move. Daum’s also done quite a bit of commercial work; you’re bound to be familiar with several of the campaigns he’s been involved with, like Target, Jamba Juice, and Nike. He’s got a whole lot going on, take a few minutes and just check it out! Everything is laced with his humor, and though it says you’ll be disappointed on his homepage, trust me, you won’t.

Yellena James

Allusion

Allusion

Yellena James uses pen and ink to create truly exquisite forms. What starts out as a single shape or line blossoms into magnificent mushroom-jellyfish hybrids, feeding my affinity for all things under the sea! Her artwork has been so perfectly described as “colorful arrangements of organic shapes and tangled lines (which) are at once floral and alien, organic and sci-fi, crafty and fantastic.” With each piece she tries to “create an intimate world that posesses its own ethos and its own emotional range.”

She’s done illustration work for clients such as Anthropologie and Nike, and her work has appeared in numerous art and design resources and publications like Vogue Australia and Giant Robot.

Josh Keyes Solo Exhibition: “Sprout”

Josh Keyes, Entangle I

Josh Keyes‘s new solo exhibition, Sprout, will be on display at the David B. Smith Gallery (located at 825 Santa Fe Drive), beginning May 30th through July 3rd. Presenting a series of new paintings with a focus on the theme of overgrowth, Sprout delves into Keyes’s vocabulary of imagery, intertwining animals and objects to create a simultaneously mysterious and unsettling juxtaposition between the natural and the manmade landscape. Keyes’s body of work conveys anxious and realistic visions of a possible future due to current global warming predictions.
