Angela Fan

angela-fan-is-deadI think that the web design of  Angela Fan’s web page is fantastic. I’m loving the concrete poetry style and hoaky yet sophisticated use of imagery. Reminds me of Beau Johnson’s work, and my favorite old site by Curt Cloninger called Titler.com which is no longer online.

Anthony Record’s work with acrylic, burlap, acrylic and other materials is really taking me to that happy primary place. Looks like glitter is also involved.

Nick Blinko

Nick Blinko is considered an outsider artist. He also leads the relic punk band Rudimentary Peni. No one knows much about him other than a few smapshots of him and a few documents recording the time he spent in a psychiatric ward as a youth. subsequently, he believes that the anti-psychotics prescribed to him obstruct his creative impulses and spends long periods off of his medication, recording and creating detailed compositions of faces, coffins, figures, handwritten notes. I think appreciating his work helps if you are familiar with his music too. Surprise! he never made a website either.

Virtual Museum of Dead Places

I recently returned from a trip to Beatty NV, cutting up through Death Valley National Park. There is something interesting about abandoned buildings, how they are reclaimed by their environment  in a way. One might assume it plausible compare architecture to living things in this way.

Katelyn Reece Farstad is a fine artist currently based in Weimar, Germany studying at Bauhaus University for a semester. She’s got a kooky blog with lots of bizarre collages, gifs, and drawings. Really fun and random.

Die Walküre

The controversial rendition of Richard Wagners Die Walküre is still at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion for a couple more days. You may recognize scores from Die Walküre, or The Valkyrie from Apocalypse Now, or pretty much any scene from a movie where bombs are getting dropped. The interesting aspect of this otherwise ultra-dated opera is that, aside from the music and singing, everything about this performance is modern. Modern like all the props are made out of neon tubes. And most importantly, Placido Domingo, one of the two remaining Three Tenors, is the leading role.
