What do you get when you combine the playfulness of a child’s drawing, the grunginess of a zine, the general awesomeness of MS Paint, and perhaps just a drop of LSD? You get the work of Berlin-based illustrator, Frank Höhne. Frank’s drawings are delightfully messy – there are endless stories woven into the varying typefaces, characters, and shapes. Even better – Gestalten just released a book on Frank this month. It was really hard to pick, but we have a few of our favorites from Frank’s endless portfolio after the jump.
Brooklyn Brown’s “A Machine Frame of Mind” is a project that investigates the evolving relationship between machines and humans. In a near-distant future (and really in our current present), machines and humans will hold conversations, relationships, and (of course) look at each other. As just one part of her extensive series of projects centered around computer vision, Brown created “Do You Want To Be Recognized”, a series of portraits that explore a potential for the development of trends that include accessories and make up that allow us to be tracked and recognized better by machines.
We can like status updates on facebook… we can favorite tweets on twitter… we can give videos a “thumbs-up” on youtube… but why can’t we cry? As the first part of an intensive study into the role of crying in a networked culture, the I cried button is an experiment conducted by Dee Kim & Bistin Chen. Using Google Chrome, you can install the button as a plug-in in youtube and press it when you cry while or after watching something from youtube. The button functions similar to the ‘like’ button, because it quantifies and saves your input, but instead of rating the material with a set of shiny stars, your emotions are gauged by tear drops…
This coming Wednesday and Saturday night, the thesis work from the GradMediaDesign department at Art Center will be on display at the South Campus Wind Tunnel, a former supersonic jet testing facility at 4 HOURS SOLID. On a personal note… I’m in this! Other graduate departments on campus (broadcast, fine art, environmental design, transportation design) will also be on display. The show will feature a very diverse group of work. The early versions of some of the thesis work hasevenbeenfeatured on BD in the past!

Baltimore-based artist, Dan Everett, has a great body of work that really packs in a detailed glimpse into the artist’s comedically strange mind. With inspiration coming form Indian miniatures and Buddhist Mandalas, Everett’s pieces feature bizarre characters that are born from a stream-of-conscience making process. As a way to give back to the city he works in, Everett displays his work throughout the town by hanging them on abandoned buildings. We’ve got a great selection posted here, but be sure to take a peak at his portfolio site.
Jörg Brüggemann’s work captures the raw aesthetic behind the fans of heavy metal in order to illustrate the genre’s ability to unite the fans of it’s sound in order to create a unique culture, despite social, economic, or political differences. The photographs have been taken all around the world including Argentina, Austria, Brazil, Egypt, Germany, Indonesia, Malaysia, Switzerland and the USA.
“From the Backseat of my Car” is a photographic series by Alícia Rius. You probably guessed it, but the photos are shot from the backseat of a car. From abandoned cars, specifically – these shots truly depict a beautiful decay.
BeMySatellite is a new public initiative founded by LA-based designer, Bora Shin, that will be officially launching it’s first “mission” at 09:32–9:38AM on Monday, 02/26/2011. Starting with Los Angeles County, the initiative aspires to help every individual on planet earth (roughly 9.83 million people – no big deal, right??) collaboratively leave their mark on commercial satellite imagery (think Google, Yahoo, Bing…). Put simply: the project reinterprets a satellite to be one that facilitates creative opportunities for self-expression, public art, and performance as opposed to one that solely documents and monitors the land.
