Clay Hickson’s Saved By The Bell Meets Matisse Collage Aesthetic

Clay Hickson‘s work has got that “Saved By The Bell intro meets a Matisse collage meets a Lichtenstein painting meets Greco-Roman sculpture” feel to it. He takes you into simple rooms occupied by simple foods, simple men, and simple women, with great speed and pacing. He uses an ancient and modern language. It’s a pleasant viewing experience. He tumbles and flicks.

THE CREEPY AND FUNKY ILLUSTRATIONS OF Robert Beatty

Kentucky-based Robert Beatty broke out with his cover design, and interior contributions, for the 8th installment of the esteemed Kramers Ergot comics anthology. And this foray was furthered with his recent sequential contribution to Space Face Book’s Rat Hex. His work is surreal. It’s funky. It’s creepy, and strangely erotic at times. It is often rendered with a soft fuzz and a hard edge, which is present in his most distinct work. It fits perfectly into the fields of poster and album design, and looks like a strange relative of the classic Fillmore posters. He also makes music, twittles, and flicks. Watch out.

Artist Interview: Michael DeForge Is King Trash

The world of child mafias, gooey relatable beasts, funky leathery space dudes, soft bodies, diseased bodies, and crusty bodies, is the world of DeForge. Toronto-based Michael DeForge is running amuck in the independent comic’s scene. He is consistently putting out top-notch work executed in his very distinct style, a style that allows for plenty of room for experimentation while still being immediately recognizable as the “DeForge touch”. At age 24, with just a few years solidly devoted to comics, it’s amazing to imagine what he will achieve in his lifetime. On top of that, he does prop and effects for the wonderful Cartoon Network series Adventure Time. He has the drive. He has the look. He has it all. He is King Trash.

ANDY BURKHOLDER

Chicago-based Andy Burkholder has been posting a consistant supply of mind-clearing one-pagers on his wonderful tumblr. He’s got something special going, and he’s just riding the wave real hard. His work outside of the one-page bits is just as impressive, but more focused on experimentation, as opposed to a formally consistent body of work. Check out his web, his flick, and visit him at CAKE. A buttery smooth man.

CF’s Underground Comics

CF, offspring of Fort Thunder, and Providence-based artist/musician has consistently created some of the best comics in the underground genre. His work in undeniably his own, and although it is often duplicated, his work remains distinguished from the rest. The delicacy and humor of his masterwork, POWR MASTRS (1,2,3), puts him easily in my top 10 for contemporary comic artists. He blogs and twits, he is a Picturebox regular, and he performs under the moniker Kites while he blasts out sonic booms. He is a gem.

Sam Vanallemeersch- Two Styles, One Artist

Antwerp-based Sam Vanallemeersch has that rare ability to work in two distinct styles that feed and grow off of each other’s strengths. His one style, full of nuanced detail and dense atmospheres, can entertain the eye endlessly. His other style, which relies on simplified forms that tend to become entangled in a puzzle piece manner is equally as effective. Consistent throughout is an accessible body of work that retains all integrity no matter what approach he takes. His unstoppable production is the reason he has two separate websites packed to the gills, here and there. Jaw-droops.
