Two of my favorite upcoming artists, Timothy Bergstrom & Denise Kupferschmidt recently opened up solo shows respectively @ Halsey McKay in East Hapmton. Tim brings a new suite of his gluey material paintings that visually imitate sounds, while Kupferschmidt shows a series of studies surrounding a sculptural installation, as well as a lovely mural. Sarah Weber is a Chicago based artist that is making some really nice work right now. Aggressive graphite mark making, cutting ,burning, layers of of vellum and globs of gold coalesce into really physically engaging drawings. In a recent attempt to find contemporary artists making fresh, black and white imagery, I fortunately stumbled upon Sam Moyer‘s, washed out, subtle abstractions. These images, composed of bleach and ink, are soft and elegant and fair in scale. I want one. Many more after the jump!
Not only does Josh Reames write great reviews for New American Paintings and run an odd little basement gallery in Chicago (Manifest Exhibitions), but he makes great paintings too! Been hearing the name Dan Gunn a lot lately, and for good reason. I don’t just throw around the term”forward thinking”, and Gunn’s work embodies exactly that, a forward thinking approach to painting. Taking a constructed, material approach to making an image, Gunn offers up an array of abstraction through various modes of presentation. Gunn integrates common structures alongside notions of commercial display, found objects, and traditionally rooted painting techniques to concoct pieces that aren’t quite like anything I’ve seen before. Andrew Falkowski just unleashed two new bodies of work Andrew Rafacz Gallery in Chicago, and both are really impressive. Body A – being a series of monochromatic airbrush painting depicting pop iterations of Napolean Bonaparte. New to the East Hampton Gallery scene is Halsey McKay, a lovely space that has presented an excellent exhibition program in the last 6 months.
