Year Book Photos 1989/2009

Robbie Augspurger’s halo-framed, serious soft lit yearbook style photos of meta-mockingly universal avant-garde hipsters kind of look like every kid I went to art school with. Alone, meditative, satirically pleased in their undulous Alanis Morisette-induced irony, they hold symbols of their trade. Cheap beer, American Apparel headbands, bushy beards, outmoded key-tars, bad/good sunglasses (including post-op laser eye surgery senior citizen style & your weird Uncle’s shades) and Bill Cosby sweaters. You know the type. ¬†I can’t explain why simple headshots of people who look like extras in a Miranda July/Michael Cera movie, done in tasteful/tasteless late 80′s/early 90′s Kodachrome, are so endlessly amusing. But they are. Robie also does wedding portraiture. Fitting though, right?

Jimmie Durham

JimmieDurham

Jimmie Durham’s latest exhibition, “Obsidian,” explores the poetics of the black volcanic glass material, once favored by Mesoamerican cultures in shamanic rites and the creation of mirrors. Above is “The Doorman,” fashioned after Texcatlipoca, meaning “smoking mirror,” an Aztec deity represented by his characteristic black obsidian mirror. And creating the world. I love these contemporary-ancient new magic sculptures. If you’re in Mexico, Durham’s show is up until February 6th at Kurimanzutto.

Fantastical iPhone App- Ghostgarden

Ghostgarden2
Ghostgarden1

Anita Fontaine has created a brand new iPhone app that lets you unlock secret narratives as you travel through gardens. As you walk through the Fairyland-like map your iPhone displays, you can travel to specific destinations, that, when you succesfully arrive uncover the next part of a hidden story. It’s like a video game treasure map for adults- and I love the concept of layering another reality over the existing one, creating a brand new history that complicates our understandings of space, time and truth. Video after the jump explaining it more in depth!

Doug Burton’s Celestial Mechanics

Celestial Mechanics from Doug Burton on Vimeo.

Doug Burton’s 3D digital animation “Celestial Mechanics” was conceptualized as a kind of reality-fabric altering pulsating entity. A kind of self-combusting black holes. I am hoping for the day when I actually see the walls wormhole out to an alternative universe! The artist explains: “Through the transmogrification of the matter of the walls and space within and ouside of the studio I have been exploring he realms that exist beyond in a distant past or parallel present.” Heavy!

The “Perfect Woman”- animatronic, speechless and able to cook!

I have to admit, while the spectacle of animatronics is impressive, what struck me most about this video is the concept that the “perfect woman” not only exists, but can be created by a pair of two men….as a robot. Her purpose is for pleasing “every man, who could not find the perfect woman,” so she can “love them, understand them, while taking care of the housework.” Excuse me, but was this mindless, speechless robot-woman with unseeing plasticine-glazed eyes and pleasant vocal recognition (when spoken to) voice time warped from a futuristic 50′s, where men believed a dream woman should not actually have an opinion, but be extremely competent at massage and cooking delicious meals? Is this some kind of weird bogus Bill ‘n’ Ted time warp? (At least this robot won’t need to be medicated with speed to complete her tasks.)
