Tim Roda’s MacGuyver-ed Mysticism

TimRoda7

Tim Roda’s photographs seem to create ancient and historical scenes of magic and myth through slightly improvised, found materials. The above image, “Centaur” is striking for its oscillation between a certain kind of epic grandeur and a bizarre, seedy perversion. Many of his images superficially appear to be from some near-distant canon of royalty, though quickly dissolve into household snapshots. There’s something youthful as well in their innocent attempts at grandeur with just a little imagination, always infused with some kind of borderline hint at violence or conflict.

Altered Realities Bad for Human Health?

photoshopped-jessica-alba1-before-and-after

I came across an article on Reuters the other day detailing the French government’s proposal of a law that would require all digitally modified images  to come with a warning stamp/disclaimer stating: “Photograph retouched to modify the physical appearance of a person.” Valerie Boyer, French parliamentarian, alongside some 50 other politicians, proposed the law to fight what they see as a warped image of women’s bodies in the media & popular culture. Boyer stated, ”These images can make people believe in a reality that often does not exist.” They believe that these “false realities” could lead to various kinds of psychological disorders, most prominently eating disorders within young women.

What’s interesting is that this law would apply not only to the glossy spreads of fashion mags, but all press photographs, political campaigns, images on packaging, advertising, even art photographs. More before/after digital photoshopping after the jump. I wonder in the Renaissance if people were upset that fair duchesses and dukes were painted with a smokey-sfumato to hide their big noses….at any rate, this holds some strange implications as far as how we view photography as some sort of implement of “truth”– seems to me gone are the days the photograph will be considered as any sort of factual record…

What do you guys think? Regulating altered realities good, or detrimental to creative expression….? (Also, is it me or is there something strangely visually satisfying about these photos…)

Goodbye, fearless intern Greg Ruben!

dscn1862

The seasons change, the brittle Autumn leaves fall to the fore, summer’s last days ebb a California surfer’s wave…what I’m trying to say is that yet another fearless intern, Greg Ruben, will be moving on from B/D. We here at B/D decided you readers might  be interested to know who some of the folks are here who work tirelessly and relentlessly for stale bread, water and “experience” (aka interns)- and so we are spotlighting Greg, whose last day is today! Greg is a design student at UCLA and has contributed to some great graphics over the course of his stay here, as well as many rapier-sharp witted blog posts that I am sure you have come to know and love. His personal work is pretty cool too. So thank you for the music, Greg, and forgive me for tricking you into thinking the above photo was in some way related to a post about shipping out our latest season of B/D Apparel. (Hey, at least I told you to smile!)

Baker’s Dozen Opening @ Torrance Art Museum Sat.

picture-2

Eric Yahnker

The exhibition “Baker’s Dozen” will be opening this Saturday, Sept. 19 at the Torrance Art Museum. The show is a really great survey of some of Los Angeles’s  best & brightest contemporary artists- if you haven’t seen the works by the artists exhibiting here yet, you no doubt will soon–many of them have been making some waves around the So Cal art scene for a while. Don’t miss this show if you’re in the area! To give you a taste, I’ve included (no pun intended based in any way off the image above) selected works by my personal faves after the jump including Allison Schulnik, Tia Pulitzer, Jared Pankin, Aragna Ker and Mark Dutcher. The brilliant Eric Yahnker featured above. For the other half of the baker’s dozen, you’ll just have to check out the show yourself!

Mysterious Meyoko

meyokoinkdrawigI was perusing the Beautiful/Decay Creative Pic Flickr Pool this morning and came across Meyoko’s densely delicate ink drawings. Half Arcimboldo’s grotesque fruit heads, half seething with creatures from the garden of  Hieronymous Bosch‘s earthly delights, Meyoko’s works flit, tangle, weave, drip, and feather their way into strange specters. I realized I’ve seen her work before, somewhere, though I can’t recall exactly, so when it popped up on our Flickr page like a repeat-dream I was strangely enchanted- fitting I suppose! More works after the jump. I can’t seem to find any other information about her aside from her Flickr page. So, Meyoko, if you want to tell us who you are (or anyone knows the whereabouts of this mysterious ink-chanteuse) let me know!

Soft Burgers Crochet Pizza

joykampia

You gotta hand it to Joy Kampia- her taste in food is impeccable. Most of her soft sculptures featured crocheted pizza, burgers, ice cream and pie. Talk about a party! Joy brings, eh, new “Joy” to playing with your food! (Wah wah.) The pièce de résistance might have to be the wearable burger, above. Knitted turkey, blueberry pies, sundae dresses and giant donut necklaces after the jump!
