Art Works Every Time Opening June 12!

Colt45_Flyer

The last month or so we’ve been extremely busy, putting the finishing touches on our “Art Works Every Time” exhibition. We sifted through hundreds of submissions to pick 10 of the most exciting emerging artists around today. Since we teamed up with Colt 45 to present this one of a kind exhibition, we got to brainstorm all kinds of creative giveaways we thought you’d enjoy: free Colt 45, free T-shirts to the first 100 visitors (with Colin Strandberg’s award-winning graphic, above) and even never-before-made (or tasted) Colt 45 ice cream by local fave Scoops! Trust us, it’s delicious.

To top off the night, we’ve invited comedienne Charlyne Yi, who will perform with her band Flesh. Yi’s debut album was produced by none other than Tenacious D, and her live performance has to be seen to be believed!

Whew! Now we just have to hang the show! Can’t wait to see all of you at the opening!

Painterly Abstract…Tattoos?

AmandaWachob

Amanda Wachob swathes tattoo ink permanently into flesh in such a soft, ethereal manner it calls to mind not rose & star flash art off the wall, but more the way an Impressionist might dabble watercolors across paper en plein air.

Super Meta-Meta Representations

RobbieAugmainRobbie Augspurger liked his 2 page spread in B/D Book 3 so much, he made this super meta-meta representation of a photo of a photo of a photo of a….wait. Anyway, here is an image of his contribution resting on an amazing Ionic-period Roman column/plinth held by the same people, in the same outfits… in the photo! My future self seriously just went back in time on the most excellent adventure and bogus journey all at once. More images of Book 3 and his spread floating in timeless cosmos and dusty gradient-ridden liminal spaces below.

Richard Colman

RichardColeman1

Richard Colman will be displaying new paintings, sculptures and site-specific installations at New Image Gallery for his exhibition “Keep Out The Light,” opening this Saturday, May 22nd. Fusing a vibrant palette, super-flat pop sensibility and geometric ephemera, his work are like mandalic inscriptions for millenial worship.

Ryan Humphrey

RyanHumphrey

I am sure the mop-topped quartet known as the Beatles might not necessarily appreciate Ryan Humphrey re-appropriating their ¬†their classic 1964 album cover for heavy metal (tears of blood and Slayer, to be exact), but I do. This reminds me of posters I made for our practice space in Hollywood a few years ago, which was sort of similar but the Fab Four had Kiss facepaint on, and were more in their go-to-India-psychedelia era. Other gems? Judas Priest’s seminal album “Screaming for Vengeance” emblazoned on a gay pride rainbow flag.

Swoon Book Giveaway & Exclusive Interview

SwoonIntro

To celebrate the release of Swoon‘s new monograph, we have teamed up with Abrams to provide a unique promotional giveaway & editorial. All you have to do is use the word “Swoon” in a sentence and leave it as a comment at the end of this post for a chance to win a copy of her new book! We’ll select three lucky winners in total- so choose your words wisely and contribute your most creative sentences! Confused on what an award-winning sentence looks like? Bad sentence: “Basically Swoon’s stuff is pretty cool and kinda nice.” Winning sentence: “Awake forever in a sweet unrest, still, still to hear her tender-taken breath, and so, live ever– or else Swoon to death.”

If that’s not enough, we’ve also conducted an exclusive, behind-the-scenes interview that gives insight into Swoon’s work. Who knows- maybe you’ll find inspiration for your winning sentence! Read on to find out more about the process of creating her book, how Swoon rifled through her personal archives to create unique spreads, her surprising reaction when the book was finally in her hands, as well as her inspirational, one-of-a-kind mentality towards the creative process and more.

Jimmy Joe Roche

Today, I got an email from Jimmy Joe Roche that read: “Every once in a while I feel like I can bend reality by focusing on a white dot of energy in the center of my chest or middle abdomen.” Looks like Mr. JJR got a new haircut, new magic powers, and a new video. Careful, kiddies, it has graphic language. (But hey, it’s art, right?) While his older works played with mysticism from a kitsch aesthetic (embroidered Peruvian ponchos paired with cheap vid effects, like stock image howling wolves), these new videos verge on dead-faced psycho internet 2012 stoner-conspiracy theory. I don’t know whether to laugh or run.
