Beautiful/Decay X Royal Talens Part 2- Paint Factory Tour!

We’ve saved the best for last with our last series of photographs from our European travels with the folks at Canson and Royal Talens. Although we went to dozens of galleries, had a private after hours tour of the Louvre, and got to enjoy the beauty of Amsterdam- the best part of our trip was visiting the Royal Talens factory in Apeldoorn. Usually our interactions with art supplies happen in Blick and Utrecht art stores, so being able to see how all those magical art supplies gets made and packaged was a rare treat.

BEAUTIFUL/DECAY X ROYAL TALENS Amsterdam Trip PT. 1

I’m happy to present second installment of photographs from our amazing European trip with our friends over at Royal Talens And Canson. If you remember we started our trip in Paris and made our way over to Amsterdam, stopping along the way to check out all the museums, galleries, and sights that each city offered.

We started our first day in Amsterdam with a boat tour of the canals to get acquainted with the many tiny streets and canals that zig zag throughout the city. Along the way we saw many amazing examples of dutch architecture, design, street art and of course Houseboats!

A Day In Decay: Wavves & Best Coast

Last night I surprised the wife by taking her to the Wavves & Best Coast show at the Music Box here in LA. I have to admit that the main reason we went was to see Best Coast but Wavves stole the show with one of the best live performances I’ve seen in a while. You may be asking yourself “I wonder if they had pyrotechnics, mcrazy costumes, or a kick ass light show?” The answer is No. There act was simple. Get the 3 members on stage,  play as fast and as hard as you can, and don’t give a fuck. It’s a simple formula that is highly underrated in this age of costume changes and theatrics. Wavves killed every last song like their lives depended on it. They thrashed around, threw alien shaped beach balls and silly string at the crowd, and banged their heads like crazy rock muppets long overdue for a haircut.  Their performance was a testament of how fun it is to be young&free and reminded me to fight the urge of turning into a crabby and cranky old man.

A Day In Decay- What’s In The Mail Box

Everytime we go to the mailbox a new treasure awaits. Usually it’s an invitation from a gallery, or postcards promoting an illustrator or a discount card for Staples ( I love office supplies!). However every once in a while i’ll get something that catches my eye.  Mograg Magazine (pictured above) is a themed magazine from Tokyo. It’s almost all in Japanese but from what I can tell they select a different theme for each issue (like b/d) and feature artists working in a wide variety of media. It leans heavy on the illustration side of things but there’s some good stuff inside.

Vidal Sassoon- How One Man Changed The World With A Pair Of Scissors

Last night I went to see Vidal Sassoon, How One Man Changed The World With A Pair Of Scissors at my local art house movie theater. Since it was a Sunday night we were expecting to have the theater mostly to ourselves but the place was buzzing with hundreds of hair dressers from all over Southern California. It was an amazing scene. Everyone in the theater knew one another and were busy chatting away and complementing each other on what they were wearing and of course their hairstyles. I have to admit that I was the odd man out since I’m not a hairdresser, don’t know much about Vidal Sassoon other than seeing his hair care products in stores. Nevertheless I am a documentary junkie so I strapped myself into my seat and prepared myself for 1.5 hours of nothing but hair talk.

Vidal came from humble beginnings, growing up in London orphanages for most of his youth. Without a college education, a father, and any financial support he managed to take the hardships of life and turn them into motivation for getting ahead. Not being content with being average, he set out to revolutionize Hairdressing. Vidal is by far the most groundbreaking and famous hairdresser in the world. He has reinvented the way hairdressing industry not only by creating bold new hairstyles inspired by architecture but also by changing the way hair salons looked, creating the worlds most prestigious hairdressing academies, and starting the first and most well known haircare line launched by a hairdresser. If these achievements aren’t enough Vidal also is a best selling author, one of the first people to promote yoga and pilates in the US, and hosted a wildly successful TV show with over 200 episodes. More than a documentary for the hairdressing industry, Vidal Sassoon is an inspiring story that illustrates what one person can achieve with conviction, ingenuity, and ambition. Watch the official trailer for Vidal Sassoon after the jump.

Awesome Video Of The Day: Italo Romano Is My Hero!

Italo Romano is no average skateboarder. He skates better than most people I know and doesn’t sweat the small stuff like not having legs. After watching the above video I felt like a fat, lazy pessimist who see’s the world as a half empty cup. Make sure to watch this video next time you’re complaining about how tough you have it, how things feel impossible, or when you want to give up. Thanks Italo for showing us that anything is possible and that giving up is the easy way out!

A Day In Decay: Mammoth Signs

For the last 4 years I’ve made a pilgrimage to Mammoth Lakes for the holidays to get a break from work and get some quality snowboarding in on one of the best mountains in the world. I didn’t do much work during my trip but lucky for you I managed to photograph a handful of vintage signs that can be found in tiny towns between Los Angeles and Mammoth. I’m not sure what it is but these old signs have a certain character that you just don’t see in signage these days. Here are a few of my favorites.
