Garnet Hertz, a research scientist at UCI, recently developed “OutRun,” a driving game that you can actually drive. The project’s physical form is a mashup between an arcade game from the 80s (OutRun) and a modern day golf cart complete with some sweet rims (check those things out!). Using computer vision, the graphics of the game are able to update in real time to correspond to the road ahead… making it possible to drive in a mixed reality! I don’t know about you, but I wish driving on the 10/110 interchange here in Los Angeles was this fun… Learn more about it works, and see it in action after the jump!

Fans of typography and clean illustrations with a dash of experimental yet calculated layout need to keep tabs on German designer Sven Neitzel AKA Nicer Graphics. Lets hope has access to good printing services with all gorgeous prints, posters, and graphics that are piled high on his portfolio site.

As a part of Rhizome’s Seven on Seven, Ryan Trecartin and David Karp created riverofthe.net, a collection of 10 seconds or less community submitted videos. Trecartin, probably today’s most important video artist, and David Karp, creator of tumblr, were brought together, along with several other artists and technologists, by Rhizome back in 2010. Anyone can easily submit, and the more videos the better, because one of the only negative aspects is seeing videos you’ve already viewed before. It’s an incredibly simple and effective idea, which showcases videos that are typically more interesting than most video art out there.

Okay just joking. Maybe don’t give your kid alcohol. After all this project by Anna Utopia Giordano isn’t about promoting brand name kiddie alcohol.Instead the artist is looking to raise social awareness on topics such as alcohol abuse by teens, pregnant women, and the disinterest of some parents towards their children (abandoned for days between toys and video games), how far marketers can go to gain the attention of their younger customers. Edrem, (merde backwards), is a collaborative sketchblog from three French/Belgian  designer-illustrators: Sébastien Paquereau, David Zazurca, and Steven Burke. The concept of the  project, as is instantly evident to the viewer, is based in achieving volume. Paquereau, Zazurca, and Burke just want to get as many whimsical, stream-of-consciousness graphics out into the world as possible. In Burke’s words:

“We like not to say who we are when we talk about Edrem, because this is not the point of the blog. We try to get…massive numbers of experimentations and funny things [onto the blog], but we don’t care if the drawing is well done or not, it just has to be understandable…”

We all have a tendency to get heavily involved in our various projects, exerting microscopic levels of control on our output. Edrem reminds us that pulling off the reigns a little bit can yield many fruitful results. The Edrem crew staged an exhibition in Spring of 2010 at Michard Ardillier in Bordeaux entitled, “La Palissade”.
