New(ish) Work from Minimalistic, Idiosyncratic Dutch Artist Parra

Let’s check in with Dutch artist/designer/illustrator mogul Parra for a second. What’s that dude been up to lately (besides a show at SFMOMA)? Well, looks like he’s still killin’ it with his idiosyncratic minimalistic style. Birds, babes, food, and his signature palette still in full force- good to know he’s not slowing down. His style has always had an element of vintage 70s illustration, but not that of this planet. If you’re craving some Parra imagery for your own consumption and can’t afford a limited run print or sculpture, you can head over to his clothing/design company and score somethign there. Video Watch: You’ve Got A Radical Friend

Yeasayer “O.N.E” Dir: Radical Friend from Radical Friend on Vimeo.

Radical Friend is a directorial duo comprised of Kirby McClure and Julia Grigorian, which makes colorful music videos, commercials, and films that literally rock your socks off. By combining their obvious love for the wildest aesthetics of the late 70’s and early 80’s with the modern technology of interactivity, Radical Friend have been the only ones to really push the boundaries of how to even conceive of, let alone execute promotional standards like the music video. Their uniqueness is seriously unmatched and while a majority of people may not understand what they’re doing now, they will soon be immersed in the kind of things that Radical Friend probably dreamt of years ago. To get a small taste of Radical Friend’s world, I suggest you watch the pieces in this article and then play around with THIS interactive Black Moth Super Rainbow extravaganza.

THE CREEPY AND FUNKY ILLUSTRATIONS OF Robert Beatty

Kentucky-based Robert Beatty broke out with his cover design, and interior contributions, for the 8th installment of the esteemed Kramers Ergot comics anthology. And this foray was furthered with his recent sequential contribution to Space Face Book’s Rat Hex. His work is surreal. It’s funky. It’s creepy, and strangely erotic at times. It is often rendered with a soft fuzz and a hard edge, which is present in his most distinct work. It fits perfectly into the fields of poster and album design, and looks like a strange relative of the classic Fillmore posters. He also makes music, twittles, and flicks. Watch out.

Architectural 70′s Wonder by William Hirsch

I absolutely love this house, designed by William Hirsch for art director John Holmes, (no, not that John Holmes!) most famous for his original cover art for “Jaws.” Their home is comprised entirely of salvaged, hodge podge reclaimed building materials, making it a sort of living, breathing, thrift store turned frankenstein-like architectural collage. Ah, the free-wheeling spirit of the 70s that kicks modernism’s dutch-minimalist-eames-clean line-stainless steel-white cube’s ass!
