Artist Marion Lane creates almost otherworldly abstract paintings. Her peculiar style and use of acrylic on panel seems to belong to an action other than painting. Lane’s shapes appear to grow organically, emerging more from cell division than brush stroke. However, the inorganic nature of Lane’s medium isn’t lost on her. Rather, she seems to exploit the plasticity of acrylic paint, making it plain in the shape and sheen of her fantastic subjects. Lane’s pieces at once explore abstraction and figuration as well as the natural and synthetic.
It’s been a while since we last looked at the work of Belgian Illustrator Brecht Vandenbroucke. Imbued with awesome pop culture and comics flavors, his work never disappoints. There’s so much going on in these paintings that I can’t always tell the difference between references to Adventure Time, and social commentary. But who says the two don’t mix?
Carol Carter is a contemporary watercolor artist based out of St Louis, MO. She is such a prolific painter that it proved nearly impossible to select just seventeen images to feature out of the hundreds documented throughout her website. Her subject matter is incredibly varied, ranging from swimmers, nudes, flora and fauna, to interiors and landscapes of the Everglades and Italy. In spite of painting such a vast range of subject matter, her work remains consistent with her personal style; painting with an electric color palette, she saturates values of light and dark with a brilliant range of unpredictable color that often takes on the effect of solarization. Her technique shifts between wet-in-wet application and controlled execution, producing work that is peppered with an incredible amount of detail and spontaneity. Carol’s mastery of watercolor and divergent way of seeing the world is apparent in her remarkable paintings.
The artist’s canvas is not just where the brush meets the surface. It is also a window into the artist’s mind. When viewing Lari Pittman’s work, the flashes of bright color and chaotic landscape of wild, yet calculated brush strokes, tantalize your eyes. You’re looking through the window of a genius. It always amazes me how people conceptualize abstract works such as this. Truly remarkable.
Rachael Weitzman’s work would brighten up anyone’s home and add life to any art gallery. Her paintings are more like narratives, there is a story line behind it all. For example, in her “Helter Skelter” group of paintings, (not pictured), each piece holds in stasis an unfolding event. Often, the different speeds of the brush–slow, careful pointillism, or sweeping gestural marks– vie with each other and echo the struggle for containment within the painting.
