Ceramic Bling and Insane, Animated Paper Mâché Masks by Cari Vander Yacht

Amsterdam artist Cari Vander Yacht just closed a show at Nationale in Portland. The show, Breaking Bad, consists of cartoonish paper mâché masks and ceramic bling renditions (above). I can’t exactly put my finger on the subtle insanity involved in each mask. There’s something about those guys. And sure, the lampooning of excess through altered/exaggerated gold chains and bling isn’t exactly new, but Vander Yacht’s earthy ceramic work makes them feel that way. She also sets up a nice interplay by installing the sculptural works against patterned digital prints. Would’ve really liked to have caught this one in person. Portland why are you so far? See more from the show after the jump. Read More >

Liesbet Bussche Accesorizes the City with Oversized Jewelry Street Art

Liesbet Bussche is doing some really creative, involved work in the street right now. I really like her “Urban Jewellery” campaign, which integrates over sized pieces of jewelry into public, urban space. Stone roadblocks become cufflinks. Pendants are placed upon chain barriers to create “necklaces”. The project exposes the city’s characteristics as highly individual, asserting that it is appropriate to accessorize public space in the same manner we would accessorize ourselves. It reminds us that urban areas have just as much personality as a living, breathing entity. Raymond Lemstra is an artist whose work reflects a deep appreciation for both primitive art and the subconscious workings of the inner mind.  He has a very distorted and humorous output of big-headed people with over-emphasized features, full of wonder and turmoil.  We recently got a chance to catch up with Raymond to ask him what he is up to.

My Lover the Server

AnitaFontaine1

For anyone who has received one of Facebook’s virtual gifts from a lover, or a sultry, romantically-inclined message from a high school crush via Myspace, check out the upcoming exhibition “My Lover The Server” at the Concrete Store, Amsterdam. Digital artists Champagne Valentine, above, have created a series of looping animated wallpapers that explore the notion of internet romance, drawing on real digital communications with web stalkers, strangers and actual lovers, inviting the public to remotely interact with the artwork. The exhibition, as Carrie from Sex and The City might type onto her 90′s Mac, can’t help but wonder…..Are .gifs the new bouquet of Roses?

“My Lover the Server” opens October 16th next week, and runs until October 31st.

Parra

parra

Dutch illustrator/designer Parra has done some seriously cool work. His posters, which he plasters throughout Amsterdam, are apparently highly sought after, as are his limited edition Nikes, shirts, skateboards…you name it, Parra has done an illustration for it. His style is very 1970s, with a hint of sleaze.
