Canadian illustrator Michael DeForge’s portfolio recalls the festering goodness/grossness of cartoon classic staples Ahh Real Monsters and Ren & Stimpy that made your eyeballs feel like they were covered with a layer of prismacolor slime. I love his posters for bands such as Xiu Xiu and Les George Leningrad. Very fitting.

Canadian artist Zeesy Powers makes work that I could most accurately describe as performative inter(net)-personal that’s sort of like a fortune teller at a school carnival except without the scam. <a href="http://zeesypowers.com/projects/5dollars.html" target=_blank">She Will Tell You Exactly What I Think Of You For $5 is exactly what the title says, for The Zeesy Powers Grant, she gave $1000 to someone who actually deserved it, aaaaand she also became someone’s 3 Minute Girlfriend. Whoa.

Any information regarding the details of Brandon Jan Blommeart’s existence can not be found- his current info page is a self reminder to put up some kind of blurb and maybe an animated gif. I like these sculpture/collage things he did with recycled material, though I can’t tell if they are made in a 3D modeling program or out of physical materials (a comment on his in-progress post mentions the former). These abandoned beasts struggling in the wild remind me a little of characters from Miyazaki’s Nausicaa.

Edit: I just got an email back from Brandon (who lives in Canada) with some details breaking somewhat his shroud of mystery. These sculptures are indeed made out of garbage and created for a public arts commission. The final forms will be large vinyl prints wrapping the side of a building. Can’t wait to see photos of when they’re actually up!

I was quite surprised when I found out the work of Canadian artist Ross Racine was completely hand-drawn. While some compositions are more realistic than others, all of them could pass fairly easily as documentary aerial photography of yesteryear, perhaps taken from government planes after the great post-war suburban explosion. Some of his drawings are minimal, some much more complexly textured; all present an interesting fictional view of suburban and rural America.
