Documentary Watch: The Knife Maker

Meet writer turned knife maker Joel Bukiewicz of Cut Brooklyn. He talks about the human element of craft, and the potential for a skill to mature into an art. And in sharing his story, he alights on the real meaning of handmade—a movement whose riches are measured in people, not cash. Watch the full documentary by Made By Hand after the jump.

Confessions Of A Superhero

This documentary is from 2007 but is still one of my favorites to date. If you live in LA or have visited Hollywood Blvd. you’ll be familiar with these masked performers that stand out side the  Chinese Mann theater  and pose in photos with tourists.

CONFESSIONS OF A SUPERHERO is a feature length documentary that chronicles the lives of three mortal men and one woman who make their living working as superhero characters on Hollywood Boulevard.  This deeply personal look into their daily routines reveals their hardships and triumphs as they pursue and achieve their own kind of fame.

B/D Movie Time this Wed: “Who the #$&% Is Jackson Pollock?”

urban_jacksonpollock

We continue our month long series of free outdoor screenings at Space 15Twenty this Wednesday, May 20th, with “Who the #$&% Is Jackson Pollock?”

The screenings are projected on the large outdoor screen located next to the Snack Bar. Seating is limited so arrive early to secure a chair, but if you get there late, no worries you can always sit on the floor or bring your own chair!

“Who the #$&% Is Jackson Pollock?”  takes a more tongue-in-cheek look at the inner workings of the stuffy art elite than last week’s screening, “Basquiat.” “Who the…” is seen through the eyes of a beer-drinking, sailor-mouthed woman who may have accidentally purchased a Pollock from a thrift store- and the ridiculous rigamarole she must go through to have it verified.

Drinks, snacks and popcorn as usual are available at Snack Bar!

“Who the #$&% Is Jackson Pollock?”- Wed, May 20
8:00pm
Space 15twenty
1520 N. Cahuenga Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90028

B/D Movie Time Wrap up!

Thanks to everyone that made it out to our screening of Marc Jacobs & Louis Vuitton documentary screening last night at Space 15twenty.  The screening was a great success,  with great summer time weather and comfy beach chairs to relax on. All the seats were filled within minutes and a few troopers even stood for the entire length of the movie!

A Man Named Pearl

I’ve been an avid documentary film watcher for many years now. My favorite documentaries are obscure stories about everyday people doing extraordinary things.  I always get excited to share these documentaries with friends but before I know it I forget the title. So in the spirit of archiving my findings I am creating a new category dedicated strictly to documentaries.  Below is one of my most recent finds.

A Man Named Pearl tells the inspiring story of self-taught topiary artist Pearl Fryar, whose unlikely journey to national prominence began with a bigoted remark.
