For Lucas Simões‘ Quasi-Cinema series, he stitches folded photographs together in the form of a wave and fixes them onto a support of wood and cloth to create the appearance of cinema. He uses personal photographs that he magnifies before bending them in this wave form. The construction of these photographs evokes movement through each successive image, sort of a physical representation of stop motion. Simões’ architecture and design background has influenced this and other works, some of which we’ve featured in the past. He lives and works in São Paulo.
On the heels of his current solo show at Joshua Liner Gallery, Steve “ESPO” Powers came through the Tribeca Grand Hotel with Joey Garfield for a screening of A Love Letter for You, their documentary/narrative film about the much-celebrated Love Letter mural project that went down in Philly about two years ago. The film brings ESPO and the Love Letter squad into a semi-fictional narrative surrounding a young writer’s quest to reach a special someone, and is a huge treat for any graffiti/mural/underdog fan. Put together with some archive ESPO footage, an original script co-written by Powers, and a killer shoegazey soundtrack, LL4U will hit you right in the heartstrings. No use even trying to fight it.

You can never have too many of these. Here are a few posters from classic Horror/Cult/Sci-Fi/Foreign B movies. Aliens, robots, vampires, zombies, slashers, babes. All the good stuff right here. If you’re having trouble finding inspiration for a design/illustration project, or just looking for a new stylistic direction, it’s not a bad idea to go over a few of these and loosen up a bit. Do it right, though. We’re not talking about straight copying or even borrowing here. Don’t be boring. French/Italian artist Sonia D’Argenzio sent over some of her new abstract ‘anti-photographs’ this past week, and i’m more than impressed. Her ability to pull an excellent image from film before/after/without processing is unrivaled (at least to my Tumblr eyes), and i’m even more convinced by her devotion to the analog process. She might just be the real deal.
Landscape photography is a fickle mistress. Jonathan Robert LeBlanc’s photographs weave an elaborate tapestry of cramped urban decay and endless country skies- facing history with little or no irony.
Los Angeles artist Dave Tada regularly posts film photography to his blog, Analog Pics. This in itself is not unusual; except, in an age of digital photography where memory cards can be easily & quickly filled, I find Dave’s commitment to posting his strictly analog work a refreshing and disciplined approach.
