Illustrated Type

B/D Intern Alumni and all around cool gal Alexis Kaneshiro has curated a great exhibition at Gallery Nucleus celebrating the almighty hand drawn typography. Long before we had computers, adobe software, and other mass printing services we used our own two hands to create beautiful typography for everything from signs to packaging for products. The show opens May 14th until June 6th so head on over to the gallery, give Alexis a high five and check out some killer experimental type.

Thank you to everyone who came out to the book signing/release party of Book 1! We were lucky to have three of our featured artists, Ben Tegel, David Jien and Kyle Thomas customizing each and every cover of Beautiful/Decay with an original piece of artwork. There were even some collaborative, exquisite corpse style drawings between the three artists! It was great to meet all of the artists, designers and Beautiful/Decay fans that attended. Adam Alaniz

Adam Alaniz

Germ Parade

Adam Alaniz can make pretty much anything look warm and inviting. The depths of the ocean, the mysterious rainforests–even germs! He draws much of his inspiration from landscapes, fables, science, and nature. For some reason, his paintings, especially Someone Is Calling, reminds me of a cuter version of FernGully: The Last Rainforest, one of my favorite childhood movies.

His gentle creatures and magical settings have been exhibited at Gallery 1988, Santa Monica Art Studios, Gallery Nucleus, and La Luz de Jesus. In addition, The Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles presented Adam with the Children’s Market Gold Award for Germ Parade.

Frieda Gossett

Frieda Gossett, Finch

Finch

Colorado-born Frieda Gossett‘s craftsmanship is mind-blowing. Her style alludes to taxidermy, and is highly reminiscent of tattooing. Frieda’s craft consists of dyeing and treating the leather, and actually hand-stamping (!!!) the ornate patterns onto her various creatures. She doesn’t have photos of these beauties uploaded to her site, but I managed to pull these from the Systema Naturae shows she did with Gallery Nucleus.

Jon Klassen

Jon Klassen

Originally from Niagara Falls, Canada, Jon Klassen currently resides in Los Angeles. In addition to showcasing artwork with The Ebeling GroupThe Wurst Gallery, and Gallery Nucleus, Jon has worked on visual development and drawings of sets and props for the lovely, stop-motion animated film, Coraline. The colors and shapes he employs are muted and earthy, organic and geometric. I love his simple, folksy patterns and hand drawn text.

Scott C

Scott Campbell (AKA Scott C) is a comic book artist, illustrator, and art director for Double Fine Productions. And, quite frankly, his work is adorable.
