I really like these illustrations from Sandra Beer of Frankfurt, Germany. They somehow have a dirty and nostalgic feel all at once. If I encountered the animals and youngsters of Beer’s portfolio in the real world, I wouldn’t know whether to go in for the hug or run to safety. Where others may have tried for crowd pleasingly cuteness on some of her subjects, Beer’s not afraid to bring out the ink splotches and faded palette. Also, this aesthetic carries throughout all of her work, including the digital stuff. (via)
We’re not in the habit of sharing stuff that’s not contemporary here, but sometimes you come along something that shouldn’t be overlooked, as it seems relevant no matter when it was created, and could use a little more attention. Jugendstil, the German Art Nouveau movement, was named after the late nineteenth century literary magazine Jugend, which promoted the aesthetic within its pages and on its covers. If you’re looking for some fresh typography/design/illustration inspiration, check out this online resource, which contains lots of images from and info on the magazine. There’s even some Impressionistic stuff mixed with the Art Nouveau goodness, but it all comes off as really fresh. I wonder what Jugend, which didn’t make it out of World War II and Nazism, would be like if it were around today.
Germany based artist Heiko Mueller’ art is like a fairy tale with a dark spin to it. He is fond of the country side, and is fascinated by the dark side of nature, the hidden machinations of the animal kingdom.
Jan Otto Schreiber, a photographer from Hamburg, Germany, decided to explore Australia last year. He traveled by cargo ship for two months, traveling on the Panama Canal, and in that time documented his surroundings with over 250 different shots of islands, ships, and the sea. He spent weeks editing the proofs of his documentation, and ended up with 14 dreamy images.
This series is titled: Somewhere Between the Shores. A yellow-tinged, pale collection of photographs that mimics the experience of quiet nostalgia, the subtle stillness of the ocean, and the mystery inside moving silhouettes.
Black Forest, German native Stefan Strumbel is another urban fine artist represented by the Circleculture Gallery of Berlin. Strumbel reinterprets embedded regional folk classics of his personal past: the cuckoo clock, the pre-lentan Alemannic Carnival mask… familiar objects of home transformed with pop-culture flair, bright colors and iconic substitutions; a confrontation to cultural cliches. Strumbel’s work will be on exhibit in October as part of Escape 2010: Escape the Golden Cage, International Exhibition of Urban Art, Austria.
German painter and photographer Sigmar Polke (1941 – 2010) died yesterday from complications of cancer, according to Gordon Veneklasen, the artist’s main American representative. Polke invigorated the world of pop art and beyond with his parodic examinations of consumerism and politics, especially those concerning post-war Germany. The artist resisted artistic conventions by expanding on ideas of “what art is” with his multi-faced, mixed media pieces.
“We cannot rely on it that good painting will be made one day. We have to take the matter in hand ourselves,” Polke once said. A bit of an understatement, but I’ll allow Polke’s “good painting” to speak for itself. Check out more of my favorites after the cut.
This video is bananas. Two design teams from Cologne, Germany, Lichtfront and Grosse 8, produced the video using a number of methods. First, making the sculpture and then placing four projectors ”around the object. The graphics were done in AfterEffects. [They] worked in a composition that was cut into the four output movies at the end. Then played the four videos on two computers, synchronized by a vvvv patch,” explains a member of Lichtfront. Now, that makes exactly zero sense to me, but maybe you’ll understand their wizard-talk.
