A jewelry collection by Icelandic designer Ágústa Sveinsdóttir explores the transience of all earthly pursuits by incorporating one unusual material, dust. Her metallic wearables allow their owners to experience the transformation and disintegration as the jewelry changes and decays over time.
“In this world everything existing is linked to the process of birth, decay and disappearance. That is the way of life, the way of nature. Inspired by the tradition of the symbolic Vanitas paintings, the Dust collection is a reminder of the transience of all earthly pursuits and how it can be a motive for design.”
Designer wanted to break the traditions of material use and employ materials that have been considered worthless. She chose dust as the ultimate result of disintegration: “It’s everywhere and ever-present <…> It is everything and yet metaphorically the embodiment of nothingness.” Sveinsdóttir questions the material worth by juxtaposing jewelry, a sign of beauty and wealth, and dust, an inconvenient mundane matter that people always try to get rid off.
The dust was collected from abandoned Icelandic farms. Designer pursued to find dust at its purest form, thus derelict places where time has stopped, man has left and nature has taken over were perfect. Using a biodegradable adhesive, dust particles were transformed into a jewel coating and used to cover the metallic bangles and rings. With time, the dust fades away unveiling the manmade skeleton of the object. (via designboom)
Check out some amazing aerial shots of Iceland’s volcanic countryside from Russian photographer Andre Ermolaev. The intense heat from the volcanoes produces some really unique visuals. And Ermolaev’s bird’s eye view forces us to recall how majestic our planet really is. Not to get all preachy, but if we want to preserve visuals like these, we may have to alter our actions a little. Central Saint Martins MA candidates Anita Silva and Leslie Borg designed an incredibly creative interactive product for Icelandair entitled “_scape”. Inspired by a rock found in Iceland, _scape is a layered “book” containing “sounds, visuals, textures, scents and tastes” which can serve as a reminder of Iceland itself, or just a general internal escape. Intended to evoke lava rock and ice (two strong elements of the Icelandic landscape), the object is earthy-looking, meant to strongly contrast with the sterile environment of an airplane cabin. I’m not sure a flight time long enough to allow me to grow bored of interacting with _scape exists. (via)
Winter 2010, the stunning landscape of Iceland succumbs to the Arctic cold. Beaches and lakes get frozen, but something unexpected is going to happen… the earth shakes, warms up, and suddenly a big crack opens up at the top of the glacier Eyjafjallajokull. Lava, smoke, ash and fire come up from the depth of the earth, melting everything in its path.
American photographer Christian Weber‘s work often finds him in the midst of a barren landscape. This can sometimes mean a cold, industrial city or a desolate NASA laboratory. Or, in the more traditional sense of “barren landscape,” it can mean the wide open spaces of Iceland or New Mexico, pictured above. The way he chooses to capture these spaces – in a very straightforward, documentarian/detached manner, is a reflection of the environments themselves.
