Cahen: "Traumoeba" 1956
Oscar Cahen and Gershon Iskowitz contributed to the mid-20th century modernist movement with their joyous, colorful works despite the devastation they experienced in WWII. Horton Gallery of New York’s Lower East Side will be exhibiting these works July 9th to September 8th.
Photographer James Loveday produces beautifully polished images for both fashion spreads and his own personal projects. What strikes me about Loveday’s work is that, regardless of whether he’s photographing golden perfection or morning-after mayhem, his work maintains a richness that you can almost reach out and touch.
Born in Oklahoma to a Vietnam veteran, Geoffrey Michael Krawczyk grew up in close proximity to the violence and sacrifice required by war. “My work is an exploration of the mythology of spirituality, the politics of aesthetics, and the connections between sacred and profane,” says Krawczyk. His series, “Passages,” was most recently shown at Artspace Gallery in Buffalo, New York, where he now resides.
Sculpture artist Johnston Foster’s new exhibit, Catch & Release, opens next Saturday, May 15th, at New York’s RARE gallery. Foster, whom we featured in Beautiful/Decay Issue Y, has always created incredible somethings from the populace’s discarded nothings, but in his new show Foster also focuses on creation as his subject matter. There’s a little something for everyone in Johnston Foster’s new show: sharks, tigers, hornets, unicorns and of course a pizza pie - masterfully sculpted from a myriad of materials: pvc, bicycle spokes, marbles and a kiddie pool, to name a few.
The show opens on Saturday May 15th with a reception from 6-8pm and runs through June 19th.

In his third solo show at Team Gallery in New York, Ryan McGinley continues his exploration of youth. Known for capturing spectacular and adventuresome moments, McGinley shifts his focus in “Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere” to stark, intimate portraits. Photographed in his New York studio over 2 years, the hand-picked subjects are shown bare in black and white portraits.
“Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere” opens tonight in New York and runs through April 17th.
