Photographer Lincoln Clarkes examines the street corners of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside to expose moments in the lives of over 400 female heroin addicts over the course of five years.

It began when Clarkes took a photograph of his long-time friend, Leah, “shooting up” against the backdrop of a Calvin Klein billboard starring Kate Moss- and interesting juxtaposition indeed.

“Heroines” captures the bleak realities of female addicts within the city. Clarkes exposes the physical and emotional scars of women whom inhabited a space were death was always nearby. Although the images are disturbing in many levels, it is hard to ignore Clarkes’ attempt to make the women shine through a different kind of light, perhaps a positive one, where their vulnerability brings forth an unusual kind of beauty. The photos serves as a kind of a tableau vivant of unwitnessed experiences in the social history of the Vancouver city life. (via Huff Post Exposure)

You’ve probably seen the work of Berlin/Vancouver based collective eBoy (or that of someone biting their aesthetic) at some point. Svend Smital, Steffen Sauerteig, and Kai Vermehr make up the core of the group, and they’ve created their very own world full of pixelated characters and environments through years of illustration, design, and animation work. The eBoy vision is pretty much fully realized, now everyone gets to enjoy taking part in it. The pattern design above is particularly amazing.

Bonni Reid’s Spaces Between Worlds

Self-described daughter of an eccentric mechanical engineer and a stiff-upper-lipped British nurse, Canadian artist Bonni Reid specializes in exploring the spaces between worlds through her works. The Vancouver-based painter mixes together dapper gents and lovely ladies of old with exposed – and sometimes floral – anatomy, surreal landscapes, and a bit of humor at times. Her well-crafted curiosities have been shown in Los Angeles’ La Luz De Jesus Gallery, Roq La Rue Gallery in Seattle, and several spaces in Canada, among others. Take a closer look at her work after the jump. Read More >
