Simple, small and intriguing, U.K.-based artist Anthony Zinonos‘ most recent collage works are a visual delight. Working together simple materials like magazine clippings, construction paper and glue, Zinonos presents his audience with a vintage-hued investigation into space and composition. The result of an obsession with collecting second-hand trade catalogs, magazines and old books, his works elegantly mesh together bits of commercial imagery, magazine editorial and simple geometry to produce works that are striking in their spareness, and charged with curiosity.
A member of the WAFA collective, and also represented for his illustration work by WICCA Agency, Zinonos has parlayed his aesthetic sensibilities into projects for brands like Kate Spade, Alfa Romeo and Chanel.
Kathryn Mayo and Doug Winter, a husband and wife photography team based in Sacramento, collaborate with their models to create vintage portraits, seemingly of the past, using the traditional wet plate collodion process. This type of photography was born in the 1850s, but soon faded from the foreground, due to the proliferation of more practical, less time consuming processes involving dry gelatin emulsion.
However, in today’s fast-paced iPhone app culture, where formatting is clean, easy, and instantaneous, ironically, the slow painstaking process is exactly what this artistic pair prefer about collodion. Mayo elaborates, “Each image takes about 15-20 minutes to complete from focusing the camera, coating and sensitizing the plate, exposing, and processing. So, models need to have patience as not each image comes out perfect, and it takes a few to get one we like–sometimes, there are times when the chemistry isn’t working up to par and we don’t get anything at all.” Regardless of outcome, their passion is not just about product, but discovery and investigation. Mayo continues, “I love the idea of using a process steeped in history and with the ghosts of photographers who have come before me. It is a process that is wholly addicting.”
Joe Rudko is a talented artist based in Washington state. In his current series he combines found photographs with his drawings. According to his artist statement: “These works are responses to a shifting relationship with found photographic objects. Collaging a vintage material with hand drawn addendums exposes the vulnerability of the static image.” Check out more images after the jump.
Artist Jesse Treece specializes in collage. Using vintage imagery, he creates surreal scenes and portraits. His collages nearly feel like lost scenes of 1970’s science-fiction and horror films. The collages often juxtapose science with nature, inside with outside, and large with small. Treece makes effective use of familiar imagery and styles to create entirely new artwork. The immersive pieces tell fantastic stories, as well as the mundane ones of life through a flood of images.
Retronaut recently posted a gallery of early Soviet-era Russian board game designs and illustrations. The images seem to be taken from a LiveJournal user by the name of babs71. You’ll find some seriously gorgeous propaganda here. The vintage illustrations depict workers young and old, soldiers bravely entering battle to defend the Motherland,and some nicely stylized industrial complexes. Bob Staake, the author and illustrator of more than 50 children’s books, has reimagined the covers of kid-friendly classics from the 1940s, 50s, and 60s, giving each one a twist that is often more PG-13 than G and always darkly comical. With a simple off-beat quip and a slightly adjusted illustration, those once comforting, sweet tales of little trains that could and hungry little catepillars morph into something a little more sinister and a bit disconcerting. New project from Michael Jason Enriquez, who brought you Cholafied a couple months back. Enriquez, still a student in advertising, is quickly developing a strong track record within the visual realm. It seems that he is able to communicate his pop culture impressions with enormous clarity and ease. Pretty unique quality of execution from someone in such an early stage of his career. Big ups.
The new series is entitled Mugshot Doppelgangers. Enriquez has taken some fairly ubiquitous celebrity mugshots and inserted them into an early 20th-century context:
…Our current mugshots of the rich and famous are plastered with every article, and blog these days, but look uninspired and cheap. That’s why I wanted to bring our celebrity mugshots back to a time when love and care was taken to compose a more artful mugshot – back to the 1920’s…
…We’re so used to seeing celebrity faces on our tv, on blogs, and we even know what their mugshots look like. The tacky looking mugshots we have today are in stark contrast to the mugshots taken in the 1920’s. Vintage mugshots have an eerie beauty to them that’s lost in current mugshot photography…

I like these digital collage works from British artist Hayley Warnham. Solid, bright color meets vintage 1940’s, 50’s, and 60’s personal photography in the pictures, which capture a nostalgic, innocent vibe. The use of flat color with found photography evokes the work of legendary American artist John Baldesarri. We wonder if he was a direct influence on Warnham. A lot of these are composed in such away that suggests the vantage point of a youngster, which reminds you of a time when things were much simpler. When skylines and relatives may as well have been flat blocks of color with very little texture as far as you were concerned. You didn’t yet grasp the complexities of every person and setting in your life, and everything was a mysterious wall of impenetrable brightness. (via)
