Tim Lahan’s Still Life With Sex Tape

A friend just came back from Brooklyn with New York based artist/designer Tim Lahan‘s art zine Still Life With Sex Tape, and man is it a joy to look at. His drawings are simple, graphic, and funny. It mostly consists of taking ultra banal, overlooked objects and moments, reducing them to a few distinctive lines, warping them a little, and in doing so makes them silly, interesting, and just plain cool. If you like what you see, you can order his zine from Smalltime Books. They’re only ten bucks, made on recycled paper, and free shipping to boot– there’s no reason not to have this in your life! More of his zine along with some of his still life drawings after the jump.

Count Me Out Zine

DSCN2189

T. Reilly Hodgson
sent in his ‘zine to the offices today.  Another edition of raw photography from the 22 year old Canadian.

Hodgson started taking pictures of graffiti and his friends skateboarding with an old point and shoot in the 6th grade. But it wasn’t until high school when he started taking art seriously. Hodgson uses photography to document his life as a memory building experiment. It seems that he has a very easy going approach to art and doesn’t like to force it out. At the moment he and a friend, Dimitri Karakostas work on a zine called “Blood of the Young Zine” as a means to share the photos and art work with the public.

Prior to opening up this gem, I had no idea what to expect from T. Reilly Hodgson. Especially since this was my introduction to his work. What I found between these covers were shockingly raw, snapshot-esque photos. These are not your everyday photos. The content may offend some, but I feel there’s something magically alluring about the subject and message behind each image. It’s life in its purest form. It just goes to show, that you don’t need the fanciest equipment to make the biggest statement.

Baby Was A Black Sheep

Picture 5

We received a ‘zine today from one of our previously featured photographers, Elle Perez. He even sent us a very sweet thank you note in which he offered to buy us coffee if we are ever in town. The images in the ‘zine are from his series Ghettopunk. Incredibly striking shots! It’d be cool if Elle made postcards of them…I’d love to mail some out to my friends.

C inical Depression Zine

c inical depression t. reilly hodgson

One of the best things about publishing a magazine is having packages from distant lands (Canada) show up in our PO Box. You never know what you’re going to get. Sometimes we get complete junk…. but once in a while, we hit the jackpot with something that you want to hang on to. Case in point: this cool mini ‘zine by T. Reilly Hodgson called C inical Depression. Not only is this a great example of what a few bucks and some time at your local copy center can create, but I also love getting packages with hand written notes. Even our address is tricked out on the envelope! Reminds me of B/D’s humble beginnings when we hand wrote notes to subscribers. Maybe we should go back to that?

Sonya Derman is an artist and illustrator making her way in San Francisco. Her brush is unwavering and filled with anointed colors that cue the subject matter to an extremely beautiful place. Working with a very specific tone, Sonya’s work eschews the natural for a slight tilt; and it looks terrific.

She also recently produced a ‘zine that is available for only $4.
